Epigenetic Signatures Consistent In Metastases Of 13 Prostate ...

In a genome-wide analysis of 13 metastatic prostate cancers done on men who died of metastatic prostate cancer and whose tissue samples were collected after a rapid autopsy, scientists found consistent epigenetic signatures across all metastatic tumors in each patient.?

The discovery of stable epigenetic marks that sit on the nuclear DNA of cancer cells and alter gene expression, defies a prevailing belief that the marks vary so much within each individual's widespread cancers that they have little or no value as targets for therapy or as biomarkers for treatment response and predicting disease severity.?

Samples from three to six metastatic sites in each of the patients and one to three samples of their normal tissue were analyzed to determine the amount of molecular marks made up of methyl groups that attach to sites along the genome in a process known as DNA methylation. The process is part of the expanding field of epigenetics, known to help drive cell processes by regulating when and how genes are activated. Mistakes in epigenetic processes also are known to trigger or fuel cancers.

"Knowing both the genetic and epigenetic changes that happen in lethal prostate cancers can eventually help us identify the most aggressive cancers earlier and develop new therapies that target those changes," says Srinivasan Yegnasubramanian, M.D., Ph.D., assistant professor of oncology at The Johns Hopkins University School of Medicine. "But there has been an open question of whether epigenetic changes are consistently maintained across all metastatic sites of an individual's cancer."

The research team found that while methylation patterns vary from one patient to another, many methylation patterns occur "very consistently" within different metastatic sites in an individual patient. They identified more than 1,000 regions of the genome where various types of DNA methylation were consistently maintained within their 13 subjects' genomes.

"As they evolve and grow, cancer cells acquire and maintain changes that enable them to continue thriving," says Yegnasubramanian. "We know that cancer cells maintain and pass along genetic changes in the nucleus of cells across metastatic sites, and our research now shows that epigenetic changes also are maintained to nearly the same degree."

The scientists say that the consistent methylation changes they found appear to represent so-called driver changes critical to the cancer's development and could be targets for treatment. By contrast, other methylation changes found only sporadically in the metastatic sites are more likely what are called passenger changes that occur by chance and are less promising as treatment targets or biomarkers than driver changes.

"Our study shows that for prostate cancer, at least, each person develops his own path to cancer and metastasis, and we can find a signature of that path in the epigenetic marks within their tumors," says Yegnasubramanian, who envisions that certain epigenetic changes can be grouped into clusters to be used as biomarkers signaling a lethal cancer.

Yegnasubramanian and his team also plan to study how each of the driver changes work and how they influence cancer metastasis.

'First' prototype hardware built for broadband over IEEE's white space standard

'First' prototype hardware developed for broadband over dead analog TV spectrum

If you hadn't realized already, spectrum is quite the hot commodity, and any unused slice is a potential data highway just begging to be cruised. One mostly vacant stretch is the eerie white space -- megahertz left empty when TV broadcasts move from analog to digital frequencies. The IEEE published its 802.22 standard for white space broadband 18 months ago, and now a group comprising the NICT, ISB Corp and Hitachi Kokusai Electric (not to be confused with the other Hitachi) have built the "first" prototype hardware to make use of it. White space spectrum in the 470 to 710MHz range is expected to provide wireless internet to "underserved areas" and act as an emergency backup for downed systems, when infrastructure is finally up and running. Given we're only at the prototype stage following the inception of the 802.22 standard in 2011, out-of-towners will probably be waiting a while longer before having the option to stream entertainment over those dead TV airwaves. Fate, it seems, is not without a sense of irony.

World's First TV White Space Prototype Based on IEEE 802.22 for Wireless Regional Area Network

TOKYO, Jan. 23, 2013 /PRNewswire/ -- The National Institute of Information and Communications Technology (NICT), Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. and ISB Corporation have developed the world's first prototypes of base station (BS) and consumer premise equipment (CPE) based on the IEEE 802.22 standard operating in TV White Spaces (TVWS) (470 MHz - 710 MHz). The developed prototypes will provide broadband wireless access to underserved and unserved regional areas around the world as well as bringing reliable backup broadband communications in emergency, which will follow the worldwide trend of promoting the TVWS for wireless communication systems.

Background
From replacing the current analog television (TV) technology with digital television technology, some of the spectrum previously used by analog television become vacant referred to as TV White Space (TVWS). The Federal Communications Commission (FCC) in the United States, the Office of Communications (Ofcom) in the UK, and the Ministry of Internal Affairs and Communications in Japan have initiated opening up the TVWS to wireless communication systems for efficient reuse of the unused TV spectrum, which is based on non-interfering with broadcast incumbents' operation. The IEEE 802.22 Working Group has published the IEEE 802.22-2011 standard for TVWS broadband wireless access to regional areas where it is most needed and where the TV spectrum is least used. In particular, the IEEE 802.22 systems offer around 10 times the coverage of Wi-Fi as well as enable to provide reliable backup broadband communications in emergency. However, there is no TVWS systems based on the IEEE 802.22-2011 satisfying the FCC spectrum requirements.

Achievements
The NICT and Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. have developed the world's first prototype devices of base station (BS) and consumer premise equipment (CPE) verifying the physical layer (PHY) and the medium access control (MAC) layer design based on the IEEE 802.22 standard in the TVWS (470 MHz - 710 MHz). The PHY part developed by Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. (Note 1) allows the devices to use vacant TV bands over the frequency range from 470-710MHz, the MAC layer part developed by NICT provides a medium access method based on point-to-multipoint access with supporting the different QoS levels, and supports cognitive capabilities of interference estimation, geo-location and white space data base (WSDB) access over the IP. The WSDB (Note 2) (http://whitespacetech.isbcorp.com/) provided by ISB Corporation avoids interference to incumbents of TV broadcasters from automatically selecting the non-interfering TV band.

Future prospects
The NICT, Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. and ISB Corporation in the future will develop the enhanced technologies based on the IEEE 802.22 standard and also work closely with WhiteSpace Alliance (WSA) (Note 3) (www.whitespacealliance.org) to provide products for worldwide markets. The NICT, Hitachi Kokusai Electric Inc. and ISB Corporation will demonstrate the developed prototype devices at the Super WiFi Summit (Note 4) (www.superwifisummit.com) in Miami, Florida, from January 30 to February 1, 2013.

House votes to defuse debt limit crisis

WASHINGTON (AP) ? The House overwhelmingly passed a bill Wednesday to permit the government to borrow enough money to avoid a first-time default for at least four months, defusing a looming crisis and setting the stage for a springtime debate over taxes, spending and the deficit.

The House passed the measure on a bipartisan 285-144 vote as majority Republicans back away from their previous demand that any increase in the government's borrowing cap be paired with an equivalent level of spending cuts.

Senate Majority Leader Harry Reid, D-Nev., said the chamber would immediately move to advance the legislation to the White House, which has announced Obama would sign it.

The measure would suspend the $16.4 trillion cap on federal borrowing and reset it on May 19 to reflect the additional borrowing required between the date the bill becomes law and then. The amount of borrowing required depends on the tax receipts received during filing season, but over a comparable period last year the government ran deficits in the range of $150 billion.

The measure also contains a provision that slaps at the Senate, which hasn't debated a budget since 2009, by withholding the pay for either House or Senate members if the chamber in which they serve fails to pass a budget plan. Sen. Patty Murray, D-Wash., announced Wednesday that the chamber would indeed debate a budget this year but maintained the GOP's "no budget, no pay" move had nothing to do with the decision.

President Barack Obama vows not to negotiate over the debt ceiling as he did in the summer of 2011, though he promises further action on the budget. Wednesday's developments mark a shift of the budget debate away from failed head-to-head talks between Obama and Boehner

The idea driving the move by GOP leaders like Speaker John Boehner, R-Ohio, is to re-sequence a series of upcoming budget battles, taking the threat of a potentially devastating government default off the table and instead setting up a clash in March over automatic across-the-board spending cuts set to strike the Pentagon and many domestic programs. Those cuts ? postponed by the recent "fiscal cliff" deal ? are the punishment for the failure of a 2011 congressional deficit-reduction supercommittee to reach an agreement.

This "no budget, no pay" idea had previously been regarded by many as a gimmick but has been given new life by Boehner as a "reform" to pair with an increase in the so-called debt limit. Boehner previously had insisted that any increase in borrowing authority to avoid lapses in payments to contractors, unemployment benefits or Social Security checks ? and possibly even interest payments on U.S. Treasury obligations ? be matched dollar for dollar with spending cuts. Many Republican speakers preferred to focus on the pay provision.

"This is not a gimmick," said Rep. Michael Fitzpatrick, R-Pa. "For the past almost going on now four years, our colleagues in the Senate have failed in their most basic responsibility of governance, which is to pass a budget."

"All we're saying is 'Congress follow the law. Do your work. Budget,'" said House Budget Committee Chairman Paul Ryan, R-Wis. "And the reason for this (debt) extension is so that we can have the (budget) debate we need to have."

Boehner promises that the GOP blueprint will project a balanced budget at the end of a 10-year window.

"Balancing the budget over the next 10 years means that we save the future for our kids and our grandkids," Boehner said. "It also means that we strengthen programs like Social Security and Medicare and Medicaid that can't continue to exist in their current form without some kind of controls."

But the White House weighed in Tuesday with a statement that the administration would not oppose the debt measure, even though Obama just last week dismissed incremental increases in the debt ceiling as harmful to the economy.

It also appeared virtually certain that Senate Democrats would accept the bill even though they would prefer a longer-term solution to the debt issue and believe that the "no budget, no pay" provision is silly.

While the measure permits an undetermined amount of additional borrowing through May 18, the actual date in which the government might be at risk of defaulting on its obligations would be several weeks later. That's because the government would retain the ability to juggle its books through what the Treasury Department calls "extraordinary measures."

With the debt battle averted, the next fight comes in March over across-the-board cuts that would pare $85 billion from this year's budget. They were delayed from Jan. 1 until March 1 and reduced by $24 billion by the recently enacted tax bill. Defense hawks are particularly upset, saying the Pentagon cuts would devastate military readiness and cause havoc in defense contracting. The cuts, called a sequester in Washington-speak, were never intended to take effect but were instead aimed at driving the two sides to a large budget bargain in order to avoid them.

But Republicans and Obama now appear on a collision course over how to replace the across-the-board cuts. Obama and his Democratic allies insist that additional revenues be part of the solution; Republicans say further tax increases are off the table after the 10-year, $600 billion-plus increase in taxes on wealthier earners forced upon Republicans by Obama earlier this month.

"We are not going to raise taxes on the American people," Boehner told reporters Tuesday.

According to the latest calculations, which account for the recent reduction of this year's sequester from $109 billion to $85 billion, the Pentagon now faces a 7.3 percent across-the-board cut, while domestic agency budgets would absorb a 5.1 percent cut. The calculations are not official but were released Tuesday by Richard Kogan, a budget expert with the Center on Budget and Policy Priorities think tank.

Text-based gaming making a smartphone comeback

Text-based video games were all the rage during the 70s, 80s, and early 90s, partly due to low processing power on people?s PCs. Despite processing power increasing dramatically, there are still people out there creating these games, as there?s something quite charming about them. One such game, Wizard?s Choice, is available on your Nokia Lumia.

There are probably a lot of you out there who have never played a text-based game before, and instead rely on visual graphics to stimulate your senses. Text-based games ignite the brain in different ways and force your mind to conjure up your own images using nothing but good old-fashioned imagination ? much like reading a book. This provides a different gaming-experience to each and every person who plays it.

?An arrow whistles past your head. You look back and see at least four sets of glowing eyes.?

?What do you do??

Wizard?s Choice?is full to the brim of such questions, and it?s up to you to answer correctly or the nasties in the game will soon ?end? you and you?ll need to start all over again.

As the title suggests, you are a Wizard and you?re on a quest to rid the world of evil and collect treasure along the way. I?m sure there?s a fair maiden that needs rescuing thrown in for good measure, too.

Forest Decisions

The story begins in a forest as night begins to fall. Woods can be a frightening place, especially with orcs tailing your every move ? it?s the stench and glowing eyes that give them away. How best to deal with such malodorous beasts? Stay and fight, run and hide, or leg it? All are viable options.

However, whatever decision you make will have consequences for the rest of the game. If you make the wrong decision, you may feel the sharp, burning head of an enemy arrow, losing some of your precious health points.

If you opt to use your magic to escape a situation, your manna points will be reduced, and a wizard with no manna is almost as useless as a warrior without a sword.

Use your skills wisely, and sensibly.

Throughout your journey are moments to earn morale for your fighting party and even the opportunity to earn some money. Orc ears make a tidy profit on the black-market, apparently.

The storyline is descriptive and often funny. Both of which is perfect material for allowing your own mind to create the scene. Having said that, there is the odd scattering of illustrations to help you visualise this mysterious world.

Illustration Game-over

As for the gameplay, it doesn?t get much easier. Once you?ve read the story on each page, your only task is to select what to do next and press the relevant button.

Don?t worry about saving your progress, the game autosaves at every step on the way. When you load up the game in future, you?ll be taken to the exact same point you left off.

Wizard?s Choice?is gaming from the past, delivered beautifully to open-minded gamers and into the modern world of smartphones.

Available on Nokia Lumia 920, Lumia 820, Lumia 800 and Lumia 900. Download it for free, today. Paid options allow you to avoid the adverts.

Do you remember text-based gaming the first time around? Or are you trying this for the first time? Let us know, below.

How to Quit Smoking

?

You know smoking is bad for you, but you do it anyway. You tell yourself that you?ve tried to quit in the past, and it?s never worked so why try again? Or you convince yourself that there?s too much going on in your life right now, so you?ll quit later. How do you face these thoughts and make this time a success?

Why you smoke

First, you need to understand why you are so desperately holding onto your cigarettes despite the fact that they?re bad for your health. Well, for starters, smoking decreases appetite, improves mood and can help your digestive system move, if you know what I mean.

In addition to these seemingly ?positive? side effects, you also have to realize that nicotine is physically addictive, just like alcohol and other drugs. So, when you start to cut down or quit, your body goes through certain withdrawal responses.

You?re irritable, more anxious and get headaches just to name a few. Sometimes, these negative side effects of quitting are enough to keep people smoking. Who wants to feel bad, right?

What it does to your body

Although there are reasons as to why you smoke, you also have to understand how it hurts your body. Outwardly, it makes you smell bad, discolors your teeth and makes your skin look older faster.

Inwardly, it raises a whole host of health issues. Smokers have an increased risk of cancer of the mouth, throat and lungs. They also have a higher prevalence of respiratory issues such as emphysema and problems with artery blockage.

How to quit

Luckily, you have many options when it comes to quitting. Some people quit cold-turkey and find that works for them. If it doesn?t for you, the Mayo Clinic suggests that you try some of the following:

  • Nicotine replacements, such as patches, gum and nasal sprays
  • Staying away from situations where you?re most likely to want to smoke
  • Increase your level of physical activity to help you feel better
  • Find other, more beneficial ways to relax your body such as walking and meditation

Quitting smoking is hard. No one can deny that fact. But, you can successfully kick the habit as long as you have the drive and motivation to succeed. Others have done it before you, so isn?t it time you join them?

Tuan Ho is just another human who lives on planet Earth and enjoys doing fun things like feeding ducks, cycling like it?s the end of the world, eating delicious food and, most of all, writing. He often stumbles upon inspiration while sitting in silence, listening to the stillness of life, or enjoying a relaxing shower. Other stories strike him like lightning.

A random collection of cells, sinew, nerve endings and grey matter came together to form a consciousness of infinite possibility and wonder. It taught itself to read, write and speak in a beautifully lyrical cacophony of sound and meaning. Then it started drinking too much sugary drinks and playing too many video games. Its name is now Joshua Holland and it resides somewhere in the ichor of the internet.

Los Angeles teachers agree to student test scores in evaluations

LOS ANGELES (Reuters) - Teachers in Los Angeles have agreed to have test scores factored into performance evaluations in the nation's second-largest school district, their union said on Saturday in a concession to a growing national movement to revamp teacher appraisals.

United Teachers Los Angeles said in a statement that 66 percent of the nearly 17,000 members who cast ballots had voted in favor of the new agreement on evaluations. The union has more than 30,000 members in a district second in size only to New York.

The question of how best to evaluate teachers - and how districts can remove failing ones - has sparked clashes across the country between school officials and teachers' unions. One such disagreement was behind last year's seven-day teacher strike in Chicago.

A tentative agreement had been reached late last year between the Los Angeles Unified School District and the teachers' union over evaluations, after Los Angeles Superior Court Judge James Chalfant ruled that test scores had to be a part of teacher evaluations.

The judge's ruling came in a lawsuit filed against the schools superintendent that accused the district of violating a California law that requires measures of student progress to be included in student evaluations.

The agreement between the district and the union called for teachers to be evaluated based on a number of factors, including test scores, attendance and graduation rates, Los Angeles Unified said in a statement last year.

But the union said on Saturday the deal approved by its membership excludes certain types of scores known as "value-added modeling" that it considered unfair, while it includes other test scores.

The "value-added" system is seen by some education reform leaders as a useful tool because it is supposed to isolate an instructor's teaching ability from other factors, such as students' socioeconomic status, according to a congressional report released last year.

But the union said it found the system to be unreliable.

Los Angeles Unified had originally wanted 30 percent of a teacher's evaluation to be based solely on test scores as reflected in the "value-added" rating, the union said. But under the agreement, those results cannot be used in a teacher's final evaluation, the statement said.

Superintendent John Deasy told the Los Angeles Times he planned to release details next week on how testing data would be factored into teacher evaluations, and he welcomed the decision by teachers to ratify the agreement.

"It's a sign that members really want us to begin moving forward with a more improved way around evaluations," he told the paper.

The Obama administration has pushed states to give heavy weight to quantitative measures such as test scores in designing teacher evaluations. More than a dozen states have moved in that direction, with some making it impossible for a teacher to earn a good review with a low score on so-called value-added metrics.

Florida, Louisiana, Colorado, Michigan and Ohio have been among the states that are particularly aggressive in tying teacher ratings to test scores.

Circa Raises $750K From Group Including Lerer Ventures To Revolutionize Mobile News Delivery

5330338315_87ec63d4be_zWe’ve learned today that mobile news-delivery company Circa has raised another $750K on top of the $900K raised previously. The company launched its app of the same name, which allows you to follow an often-changing story in bite-sized chunks, only three months ago. A few more big names have joined in this up-round, including: Lerer Ventures, Advancit Capital, Menlo Talent Fund, Alex Bard and Eamon Leonard. Those investors join individual contributors from its previous 900K raised, including Dave Morin, David Karp and Josh Spear, as well as firms such as Quotidian Ventures and SK Ventures. When I spoke to Circa’s co-founder and CEO Matt Galligan today, he told me that he’s extremely happy about the growth of its userbase as well as how the app itself is coming along. The team announced version 1.1, which included some design and usability tweaks that Galligan is specifically proud of. Circa currently employs seven non-editorial staffers and 12 others who manage the current news categories within the app. Regarding the funding, Lerer Partner and former CEO of Huffington Post, Eric Hippeau, had this to say: We think Circa has developed the right technology and persona to capture a large audience looking for their mobile devices as their main source of news. Growth is on the horizon, as far as what types of content you’ll be able to find within Circa. Galligan tells us “Right now, we’re exploring what categories that we want to go into next,” mentioning such verticals as Business and Sports. When thinking about what makes Circa different, Galligan says if you think of CNN as something that has nailed TV coverage of news and Huffington Post as a publication that does well on the web, Circa can be that application for mobile news delivery. Circa allows you to follow an ongoing story, like Lance Armstrong admitting that he doped during his cycling career. It updates as individual bits of information come in, rather than making you read an entirely new story each and every time. Galligan also says that Circa has been approached by large news outlets that are interested in working with his company to adopt its format. With the money, it seems like Circa will continue to hire and work on perfecting what it believes will be a format that publications will want to pay closer attention to as time goes on. 1968 Shelby EXP 500 fails to sell at Barrett-Jackson despite $1.8 ...

Barrett-Jackson Lot: 5022 - 1968 SHELBY EXP 500 "THE GREEN HORNET"

The legendary Shelby prototype Green Hornet enjoys the distinct history of being one of the very few factory prototypes from that era that survived the crusher. It represents a rolling history of what was happening within Ford and Shelby American in the heyday of the American muscle car era. In 1967 the Ford team was impressed with a prototype Mustang known as "Li'l Red" which inspired the "California Special" also known as the GT/CS. As a result of this effort, two prototypes were built. One of those prototypes was VIN 8F01S104288, a Lime Gold, 1968 Mustang notchback, with a deluxe Ivy Gold interior, 390 V8 engine and C6 automatic transmission. After completing the show circuit, the decision was made not to move forward with the GT/SC program, but instead of being scrapped, the Lime Gold notchback was sent to Shelby American to once again become a prototype, this time for a different kind of Mustang...a Shelby. It was going to be an experimental Shelby, EXP 500, a prototype that would become fondly known as "The Green Hornet." Many modifications were done, as the Green Hornet became the platform for innovation in design, performance and handling, including an experimental Conelec fuel injection system, independent rear suspension and a unique rear disc brake configuration. The Green Hornet became the pet-project of Fred Goodell, Chief Engineer at Shelby American, and both Fred and Carroll Shelby himself spent a lot of time testing and developing components for this project. The destiny of most all concepts and prototypes of the era, especially when the concept did not make it into production, was to meet their demise at the business-end of a crusher. In the case of the Green Hornet, fate intervened, and a Ford executive's fondness for the car, and his ability to wrangle some paperwork, saved the Green Hornet from the crusher and allowed it to slip into the mainstream where it enjoyed a somewhat mundane existence for decades until it was rediscovered and restored back to its former glory. The provenance and story of this incredibly significant piece of Ford, Shelby, and muscle car history is widely publicized and documented. For decades it was thought that the Green Hornet had been destroyed like "Li'l Red" and its celebrated existence had become nothing more than urban legend. When the Green Hornet was discovered to be alive and well and documented by none other than Fred Goodell himself, it was nothing short of miraculous. The Green Hornet's provenance of being a double-prototype, and an experimental platform for innovation and design, puts it into a unique category and represents the best of the best at both Ford and Shelby at the time. Arguably the rarest and most desirable Shelby Mustang of all time, with a documented provenance verifying its authenticity and history, it is, as Carroll said: "the one and only Green Hornet."

What Your Prospects Really Care About

Track your small business? prospects and sales with the help of a free simple CRM and sales tracking app like Base.

?

During a meeting with the owner of a small software company, we talked about the slide deck his sales team uses in face-to-face meetings with prospects and he proudly stated that the most powerful slide was the one that featured the organizations his company worked with.

When I asked him why he thought this was such a great slide he told me that it demonstrated that his company had the capability to work with large organizations and that it reduced a prospect?s potential fear and hesitation about moving forward with the buying decision.

It was interesting hearing his perspective because I completely disagreed with it.
This is common myth that many business owners and sales people fall prey to. They mistakenly believe that who they work with is important to people they are selling to.

However, the reality is that your prospect simply doesn?t care. All they want to know is what you can do to help them solve a particular problem or concern; it seldom matters who you have helped deal with a similar problem in the past.

Here are a few key issues your prospects really care about.

Increasing sales

I don?t know a business owner on the planet who doesn?t want to increase their sales and grow their business. Entrepreneurs are obsessed with growing and expanding and capturing more sales and they spend a lot of time thinking about how to achieve this goal.

If you can demonstrate?and prove?that your solution will help them achieve this goal, they will sit up and listen.

Decreasing costs

All the sales in the world don?t matter if a company is not profitable. There are plenty of examples of organizations who appeared to be highly successful only to go out of business because they couldn?t generate a profit. However, managing expenses and decreasing costs is a big challenge because most companies already run lean and tight.

Does your product or service offer solutions to help business owners reduce their costs without negatively affecting the business?

Increasing market share

Market share is a key measurement in the business world. You can?t grow a business by remaining stagnant and this means expanding your market. Even companies who sell to the same set of established accounts look for ways to sell more to those customers.

What can you do to help your prospects increase their market share?

Beating the competition

The legendary football coach, Vince Lombardi, was quoted as saying, ?There is no room for second place.? Many entrepreneurs are competitive people by nature and they often obsess about finding ways to beat the competition.

Although Bill Gates and Steve Jobs were friends, they were also fierce rivals and they constantly sought ways to outperform each other in their respective companies.

Can you tap into this drive and demonstrate how your solution will help a prospect outperform one?or all?of their competitors?

Increasing customer retention

Savvy business people know that keeping customers makes good business sense. After all, the cost of retaining a customer is usually much less than the cost of acquiring a new one. However, this is a challenging goal especially when the majority of companies run lean and everyone in the organization is expected to accomplish more with fewer resources.

Is there a way you can help your prospects achieve this goal?

These are just five things that are important to your prospects; depending on the industry you sell in, there could be others.

The most effective way to make a sale is to focus on what is important to your prospect, not what you think is important.

My husband of 14 years continues to betray me year after year. Although I cannot be sure he's had physical relations with other women. He is obsessed with talking to other women via email & text messages. He has gone so far has creating a false name and another email adress to have sex chats with other women. He also posted an ad looking for no strings attached relationships. I've lost all trust in him. He says he loves me with all his heart and is very remorseful for a few months, before he starts again. We have two boys and I worry about them. I feel lost, I don't know what to do. I've recent;y found some text messages to another woman, asking if this will be their year for an affair. I haven't yet confronted him, but I think he knows, because he's deleted her name from his phone. He's very clever with deleting all messages and history items from our home PC. I think he enjoys the security of a home and marriage but he's also looking for something on the side. He believes that what I don't know wont hurt me, but the problem is that I alsways know...somehow. What do I do?

I'm sorry for you. Now is the time to take action and find out how far this goes. Is it more than text/email? You don't know and need to find out. I would put a keylogger on the computer and I'm sure one of the techie geniuses will be along to tell you what to do about the phone. A voice activated recorder in his car is a must.

Do not confront him yet, not until you know as much as you can. It's hard to stay quiet while you gather the evidence but it really is the best thing. The in meantime, you take care of your babies, rest, eat, exercise when you can. Keep in touch with all the folks here who will help guide you through the madness.

Flood Insurance - The Clock is Ticking

According to a report on the news this morning, the clean up from the 2012 floods is expected to cost insurers over ?1bn and push property insurance premiums up for a fourth consecutive year.

The Environment Agency state that 8,000 properties were flooded in 2012 wreaking havoc for the property owner or tenant and more costs onto the insurer and ultimately policyholders who will pay the price. According to one-source; weather events in 2012 could lead to renewal premiums rising by up to 5% for those unaffected by the floods and by an inflation busting 50% for those flooded.

Not only are consumers facing challenges to get affordable post-flood premiums they are now being hit with a double-whammy of flood excesses on future cover of up to ?30,000, which as far as I am concerned is as good as having no insurance?at all.

There has to be some sense brought to the whole situation and much of this can be addressed by the renewal of the deal between the Association of British Insurers (ABI) and the Government to provide universal, affordable cover for all homes, including those in flood prone areas. This current arrangement (the Statement of Principles on flood insurance) comes to an end in the summer of this year and the poor people with properties affected by flooding need some certainty ? a deal cannot be put off much longer.

According to the ABI if agreement isn?t reached on a replacement for the Statement of Principles then around 200,000 homes in flood-prone areas could struggle to access cover, the Government for their part believe their primary role is to prevent flooding in the first place and are on course to spend ?2.3bn on preventing flooding and coastal erosion over this four-year period.

If your property is at risk of flooding and you are struggling to find quality, affordable cover then you need specialist Brokers who understand the challenges of flooding, they can offer professional advice and competitive terms from Insurers not frightened by the risks associated with flooding.

The Property Insurer?works with a panel of leading flood insurance specialists?please visit our site and complete the flood risk insurance form and they will be in touch to discuss your requirements and provide a quote at a time that suits you.

(AP) ? An autopsy shows that Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher was legally drunk when he shot his girlfriend nine times and then killed himself.

The Jackson County Medical Examiner released the results of autopsies performed on Belcher and his 22-year-old girlfriend, Kasandra Perkins, following their deaths on Dec. 1.

Police say Belcher killed Perkins at the couple's Kansas City home, then drove to the team's practice site and committed suicide in front of his coach and general manager.

The autopsy report released Monday says Perkins was shot in the neck, chest, abdomen, hip, back, leg and hand. Belcher's blood-alcohol level was 0.17, and was likely higher at the time of the shooting. The legal limit is 0.08 percent.

Official: Syrian troops capture much of Daraya

Syrian troops gain control of most of strategic Damascus suburb used by rebels as a base; Qatar reiterated call to send an Arab peacekeeping force to Syria

Reuters

Syrian troops have captured most of a strategic Damascus suburb used by rebels as a base to threaten key regime facilities in the capital, a government official said Saturday.

?

The announcement that regime forces had taken Daraya came a day after anti-government activists said rebels and Islamic militants seeking to topple President Bashar Assad took full control of Taftanaz air base in the northwest. That dealt a significant blow to Assad's military, with helicopters, tanks and multiple rocket launchers seized.

?

Related Stories

?

The back-to-back declarations highlight the see-saw nature of the conflict in Syria, where one side's victories in one area are often followed by reverses in another.

?

"The army is battling some small pockets (of rebels) and (Daraya) will be safe within few days," the official told The Associated Press, speaking on condition of anonymity in line with regulations.

?

Syrian troops have been battling for weeks to regain Daraya from the hands of anti-government fighters. The suburb, just south of Damascus, is on the edge of the strategic military air base of Mazzeh in a western neighborhood of the capital.

?

It also borders the Kfar Sousseh neighborhood that is home to the government headquarters, the General Security intelligence agency head office and the Interior Ministry, which was the target of a recent suicide attack that wounded the interior minister.

?

The suburb is also less than 10 km from the People's Palace ? one of three palaces in the capital used by Assad.?

Homs in ruins (Photo: Reuters)

?

Syria's pro-government media had reported that thousands of rebel fighters from the extremist Jabhat al-Nusra group have holed up in Daraya in preparation to storm Damascus.

?

Jabhat al-Nusra, which has been branded a terrorist organization by the US and which Washington claims is affiliated with al-Qaeda, has been among the most effective fighting force on the rebel side in the battle to oust Assad.

?

Syrian official statements regularly play up the role of Islamist extremists within the rebel movement.

?

The violence came a day after a meeting on Syria's conflict in Geneva in which international envoy Lakhdar Brahimi said that he doesn't expect a political solution to emerge anytime soon.

?

In Moscow, the Russian Foreign Ministry said Saturday it is still strongly against any foreign interference in the war-torn country's affairs.

?

Also Saturday, Qatar reiterated its proposals to send an Arab peacekeeping force to Syria. Qatar's Prime Minister Hamad Bin Jassem Al Thani told Al-Jazeera TV that Arabs should think seriously about sending troops to maintain security in Syria if diplomacy fails to resolve the crisis.

?

Hamad said that such a move would not constitute military intervention and would not be intended to help one side against the other, rather to help "stop the bloodbath in Syria."?

?

The Qatari prime minister, who is one of Assad's harshest critics, said that any solution that does not include a change in who holds power will not stop the bloodbath in Syria. "We support the direction of the opposition and the Syrian people to liberate themselves from this regime," he said, meaning that Assad must step down.

?

The issue of whether Assad should step down is one of the key obstacles to any peace settlement. The rebels oppose any transition that does not remove him from power, while the regime would oppose any transition that does.

NBC Sports Network will sponsor gun show despite Newtown School shootings

LOS ANGELES (TheWrap.com) - The NBC Sports Network is staying on target with its sponsorship of a major gun show that will take place a little more than a month after the Newtown, Conn., school shootings that left dozens, most of them children, dead.

A spokesman for NBC Sports told TheWrap on Friday that the cable outlet NBC Sports Network will continue to sponsor the Shooting, Hunting, Outdoor Trade Show and Conference, otherwise known as the SHOT Show. The show, a major convention for the firearms industry, will take place at the Sands Expo and Convention Center in Las Vegas from January 15-18.

The Newtown school shootings took place on December 14.

"We've participated in the SHOT Show for several years," the spokesman told TheWrap in a statement, adding that its sponsorship of the show is "part of our commitment to our outdoor programming block."

The NBC Sports Network, which was known as Versus until a little more than a year ago and had previously been known as the Outdoor Life Network, carries hunting, fishing and other outdoor programming, such as "Gun It With Benny Spies," along with traditional sports programming, according to USA Today.

The SHOT Show, which is not open to the public, is not just a trade show but "a powerful display of industry unity and its resolve to meet any challenge affecting the right to make, sell and own firearms," according to the show's website.

The show is held by the National Shooting Sports Foundation (NSSF) which, eerily enough, is based in Newtown.

The organization was in attendance Thursday at a White House meeting of Vice President Joe Biden's task force on firearms.

Since the Newtown school shootings, the topic of gun control has been very much at the forefront of national debate, with some groups calling for tighter restriction, and the National Rifle Association choosing to focus on media violence and mental illness as possible causes of gun-related violence.

Among those urging tighter restrictions is longtime NBC on-air personality Bob Costas, who called for stricter gun control during a December airing of "Sunday Night Football."

Speaking shortly after Kansas City Chiefs linebacker Jovan Belcher killed his girlfriend before driving to the Chiefs' practice complex before taking his own life, Costas cited a column by Fox Sports' Jason Whitlock in his call for gun control.

"In the coming days, Jovan Belcher's actions and their possible connection to football will be analyzed. Who knows?" Costas said. "But here, wrote Jason Whitlock, is what I believe. If Jovan Belcher didn't possess a gun, he and Kasandra Perkins would both be alive today."

NBA: Clippers home win streak ends with 104-101 loss to Magic

The Clippers got caught in a trap Saturday afternoon.

On the day Grant Hill made his long-delayed and much-anticipated season debut, the Clippers' rhythm and efficiency ebbed and flowed and their 13-game home winning streak ended with a 104-101 loss to the Orlando Magic in front of a sellout crowd of 19,060 at Staples Center.

?

Vinny Del Negro walked into his postgame news conference with a copy of the final box score in one hand and a red pen in the other Saturday afternoon. The Clippers' coach was in a critical mood after a 104-101 loss in front of a stunned sellout crowd of 19,060 at Staples Center.

"An embarrassing performance for us today," Del Negro said firmly but without raising his voice. "We got outworked in every aspect: second-chance points, rebounding. We wanted to take the 3-ball out of the game and we didn't do that at all. Then

we let them hang around.

"We got off to a pretty good start early and then we got a little complacent. We had loose possessions. Like I said, we let them hang around and then (Arron) Afflalo and (J.J) Redick hit some shots. We missed, and we got what we deserved."

What the Clippers (28-9) got was a loss that ended their franchise-record 13-game home winning streak and a harsh postgame review from Del Negro. The Clippers' defeat was their first at home since a loss Nov. 26 to the New Orleans Hornets.

"I didn't think we played very well against Dallas," Del Negro continued, "but we were able to secure a victory at the end (Wednesday). Today, we weren't able to get it done. It shouldn't have even come to that.

"I'm very disappointed in our effort."

The Clippers never trailed until the final minutes, but they also didn't build the kind of commanding lead that carried them to easy victories during the longest home-court winning streak since the 1978-79 team won 11 in a row at the San Diego Sports Arena.

Saturday's game looked like a layup, what with the Clippers tied with the Oklahoma City Thunder for the NBA's best record and the Magic (13-23) mired in a 10-game losing streak. The Clippers raced away to a 13-point lead in the first half but couldn't maintain or extend their advantage.

Soon enough, the Magic were growing larger in the Clippers' rear-view mirror. Orlando tied the score three times, the last at 99-all on Redick's layup with 1:48 remaining. It didn't stay tied for long, with Redick swishing a 3-pointer for Orlando's first lead at 102-99.

Chris Paul countered with a jumper for the Clippers to make it 102-101.

Then, after Jamal Crawford was called for charging into Redick after an Orlando miss, the Clippers lost track of Nikola Vucevic, whose dunk made it 104-101. The Clippers tried to foul, but couldn't catch up to the ball after Redick passed to Josh McRoberts, who passed to Vucevic.

Crawford then missed what would have been a tying 3-pointer at the final buzzer.

"I got the ball in transition (after Lamar Odom blocked Jameer Nelson's shot) and I thought I saw Matt (Barnes) over there (on the right wing) and I thought I made the right decision, but J.J. Redick guessed right (and drew a charge)," Crawford said of his late offensive foul.

Of his missed 3-pointer in the closing moments, Crawford said the play broke down but "we tried to make the best out of the situation."

Blake Griffin scored 30 points for the Clippers and added eight rebounds and seven assists. Crawford scored 13 points in a reserve role but on only 4-for-12 shooting. Paul, Matt Barnes, Willie Green and DeAndre Jordan each scored 10 points, with Paul adding 16 assists.

Afflalo, a former UCLA star, scored 30 points. Redick had 21 points on 8-for-14 shooting in a reserve role and Vucevic, a former USC standout, added 18 points and 15 rebounds in the Magic's first victory since defeating the Washington Wizards on Dec. 19.

The Clippers built a 13-point lead in the first quarter, with Griffin scoring 12 points and Paul adding four points and five assists. But their second unit, which has been such a forceful presence this season, didn't extend the lead the way it has in the past.

It proved costly.

"There have been many games where we didn't get off to a great start and our bench has carried us all year long," Paul said. "Today was one of those days where we got it going and our bench didn't necessarily have it. It's days like this that we have to feed off each other, but today we didn't do that."
