Auto sales look good for '13, but for the 'cliff'

10 hrs.

It?s been a disappointing holiday season for many?retailers, but U.S. car dealers have been busily ringing up sales?as the year wraps up.

If preliminary numbers for December hold up, 2012 could prove to be the industry?s best year since the long recession and painfully weak recovery began. And 2013 is?shaping up to be even better ? unless auto sales fall off the fiscal cliff. ?

?I clearly hope we get some bipartisan effort to avoid the fiscal cliff,? said Ford Motor Co. Chairman Bill Ford Jr. ?It?s vitally important for the economy that we work this out.?

That's true for the auto industry, in particular. After nearly half a decade of struggles, carmakers are ending 2012 on a positive note. November saw demand for new cars, trucks and crossovers surge at a double-digit pace. In fact, a number of makers including Audi, BMW, Honda, Nissan and Porsche are setting all-time sales records for the month. By the end of November, Hyundai had already beaten its previous full-year record set in 2011.

December, meanwhile, is expected to see another gain of around 15 percent, year-over-year, according to a forecast by LMC Automotive. The consulting firm has now upped its final forecast for all of 2012 to 14.5 million and conservatively anticipates another comfortable jump next year.

?The U.S. light-vehicle sales market continues to be a bright spot in the tremulous global environment,? said Jeff Schuster, LMC?s senior vice president of forecasting.? ?The only major roadblock ahead for the U.S. market is the fiscal cliff. Assuming that hurdle is cleared, 2013 is one step closer to a stable and sustainable growth rate for autos, with volume above the 15 million unit mark.?

Barring that setback, analysts anticipate a steady shift in the sort of vehicles Americans have been buying.?

The upcoming North American International Auto Show will feature an assortment of new products, and the debut of the all-new 2014 Chevrolet Corvette and Chevy?s next-generation Silverado pickup are likely to be two of the star attractions. But the floor of Detroit?s Cobo Center will be covered with a variety of downsized models, including Honda?s pint-sized Urban SUV Concept and the new Lincoln MKC compact luxury crossover.

Ford's?B- and C-segment models ? subcompacts like the updated 2013 Fiesta and compacts???have jumped from 13 percent?of the overall U.S. market to 24 percent since 2004, according to Mark Fields,?Ford?s chief operating officer.?And the trend is expected to continue at an even faster pace going forward.

If anything, Americans are downsizing powertrains at an even more rapid rate, trading in V-6s for inline-fours and even abandoning traditional V-8s for high-tech turbo V-6s. Six-cylinder engines now account for more than half of the demand in Ford?s big F-Series pickups, Fields said.

While demand for smaller models is soaring, sales of some traditional American vehicles have remained strong ? pickups in particular. Credit the strong upturn in the housing market in recent months, said Mark Reuss, president of North American operations at General Motors.?

While the so-called ?personal use? segment has largely dried up, there?s significant pent-up demand among contractors and other professional for pickups and other full-size trucks, something Detroit?s Big Three hope to use to their advantage as they continue to hold off import competitors like Nissan and Toyota.

Pent-up demand is likely to float all boats, says analyst Joe Phillippi, from the largest to the smallest market segments. It helps, he adds, that automotive interest rates are at or near historic lows.

On the downside, makers have been cutting back incentives as demand outstrips supply, especially of more popular models like the Hyundai Elantra and the new Honda Accord. There are still bargains to be had on slower-selling models, but research by TrueCar.com reveals that incentives have slipped to their lowest levels in several years even as transaction prices ? the price customers actually pay ? have risen to near-record levels.

And that is likely to translate into record industry earnings, at least in North America. Ironically, the market is running counter to trends in much of the rest of the world. European car sales have been in freefall all year, and without a clear resolution of the Continent?s economic crisis, few see any short-term solution.? Even China, which has seen annual growth rates approaching 100 percent over the past decade, has started to stumble.

So, makers from around the world are once again looking to the U.S. to carry the load. The good news is that ?the forecast ahead looks even better,? Toyota?s top U.S. executive, Jim Lentz, recently said, adding that ?analysts expect we will reach 16 million in just a few short years.?

That?s still well short of the U.S. all-time record of 17.5 million vehicles sold in 2005, but it?s still a welcome turnaround from the disastrous slump the industry has only just left behind.

Beneficial Tips To Successful Online Marketing For ... - Maynas Eric

Every so often, we have an idea that could make a great business. With the Internet, many good business ideas can easily be turned into reality. Follow these tips when you need help.

You can do Affiliate marketing in several ways; one of the easiest ways is to put ads on the Internet. Google AdSense and similar companies make this service easily accessible. You just need to do the work of creating the ad up front, and let them do the rest of the work for you with the sharing of your information with potential customers afterward.

Internet promotion is a form of advertising that you already have the skills for. All you need to have is you. No expensive software or other tricks are needed. Give all marketing decisions proper and due consideration before moving forward with them.

TIP! If you have free products to offer, get them listed in directories of freebies so more visitors will come to your site. For example, if you write a free e-zine, submit it to different e-zine directories.

Although email marketing services are available, you may find that you can handle website marketing via email on your own. Once you know what to do, you can use mass mailers, build lists and utilize auto-responders for marketing purposes. Plus, what you learn now will only help you more in the future.

Attract traffic to your website by utilizing events and promotions. You can offer a dollar sale on one of your ebooks, for example. When people visit your site for the item on sale, they?ll also look around the rest of your site. This can be an effective way of attracting business.

Make use of emphasis coding on your website. Emphasize a phrase or a specific word by bolding, underlining, or italicizing the given text. This technique can improve clarity in the message that you want to convey so that your audience can receive your message in the intended interpretation.

TIP! To help you stay informed on user opinions, it is a good idea to have user polls along your site?s content. This can help you improve what you provide to your readers, and will help them to feel included in your professional decisions.

A good marketing tip is to give your customers a choice as to whether or not they want to pay wholesale or retail prices, depending of course on how much they purchase. You?ll still make a profit on all items, but you?ll increase your volume.

You need to figure what content would attract your target market to your site. Once you have a target audience, then decide on the content that is most appropriate for that audience.

Do you need a good online marketing idea? Not only does it make your site feel a lot more exclusive to visitors, but it also allows you to obtain your visitors? email addresses. Offer freebies or contests, and they will be much more likely to provide you with their contact information. If there is a perk involved, a person is more apt to turn over their private email to you.

TIP! A great tip is to ensure your web page stands out. If you do not make yourself stand out in the sea of websites, then it will be difficult to entice visitors.

Put ?guarantee? in your website marketing ads if you can. Your customers take solace in a guarantee as they feel assured they are not being taken advantage of. Vary your guarantees according to what kind of product you offer. Try making a 90 day money-back guarantee on one product and a lifetime guarantee on another. Disposable products should have a short satisfaction guarantee while more durable products might have a lifetime guarantee.

Post high-quality images of your products on your site. Having clear images will help your customers decide whether or not to purchase your products. Set up a page for customers to upload their personal photographs of a product. For certain kinds of products, images that showcase what a person looked like ?before? and what he looked like ?after? using the product will work wonders.

TIP! One tip webmasters forget is to keep their sites simple. It is tempting to use a number of fancy multimedia tools, such as Adobe Flash or Silverlight, and web designers often use them because of visual effects.

If you are able to establish an emotional attachment between customers and your service or product, this may lead to more sales and loyalty from your clients. Encourage your audience to picture how much their life would benefit by purchasing your product. Your copy should allow your customer to imagine using your product at this moment in time.

Your competition is an important factor. Follow their sites and try to determine what is helping or hindering their efforts. You will get information from your competitor. Obviously, focusing on how the competition is doing can ultimately help you to become a better, more efficient marketer.

Add a feedback form to the bottom of your advertisement that solicits opinions and explanations from people who have made the decision not to purchase. This keeps you from blindly guessing at what you need to change.

TIP! Be certain that your ordering mechanism is safe and secure. You should start an account which allows you to have safe transactions done on your site.

Make useful information available to your readers on the internet to promote your small business. Aim to have content that is worthwhile and unique. You want people who visit your site to learn something about your business and you also want to make sure that you keep the information updated regularly.

Despite the fact that your company may not have the budget to hire an expensive marketing consultant, you can find many free resources on the web that can help in evaluating your marketing strategy. You can join online business communities, read marketing blogs, attend local business development seminars and conferences, and download and study e-books.

The most successful way to bring in sales is to use real time leads. When you have some real-time leads you will be able to find the customers that will find your site useful. The delay between when the customer reached out and when you can contact them is shortened to its smallest possible window, leading to a great opportunity to close the sale.

TIP! Promote your business through other popular sites online. If you spend this money, you will notice how much your traffic improves.

There has to be something on your site that visitors can?t find anywhere else. Doing so will likely increase the traffic of people interested in the product. The users to your site that were drawn to the unique aspects of your site are likely to look at the other products you sell.

As mentioned in the introduction, any business ultimately wants sustainability and longevity. From the largest corporate giant to the smallest mom-and-pop outfit, sustainability is the true yardstick of business success. All businesses must begin from somewhere. Use this advice to begin your business now.

Ditch Your Yellow Pages for the Web - Website Magazine

There used to be a time where a phonebook was America?s number one source of information. Whether you needed a plumber, an electrician or to find any other business, the hard-copy Yellow Pages were your first stop to find a business. However, now consumers are disregarding phonebooks and relying more on the power of the Internet to find new stores and businesses rather than traditional marketing efforts.

This change in focus is requiring businesses to explore and adopt online marketing methods into their business strategies in order to generate success.

66 Percent Trust Search Engines Most to Find Local Businesses

When searching for new and local businesses, two out of three Americans depend on search engines such as Google or Bing! to provide trustworthy results. As a professional, it is important understand the significance of being included within a search engine?s organically generated results pages. Consider if you are a car mechanic and a consumer types into Google, ?car mechanics near me.? If your business does not appear on the first page or two of the results, your online efforts may be deemed as useless. Consumers do not dig through multiple pages in order to find a company?s information.?In fact, research analyzed by Chitika Insights found that only 6 percent of consumers click to the second page of results, encouraging the importance of first page inclusion.?

In order to achieve a high placement on result pages, businesses need to increase their website?s Search Engine Optimization (SEO). One way which SEO can be achieved is by strategically planting keywords, or relevant terms, into a professional website. These keywords are found by searches engines to indicate if your website is credible and relevant for the website to be placed higher on appropriate results pages. Additionally, fresh and updated content keep search engines interested thus improving your website?s SEO to ensure that customers find you more quickly.?

More than Half Visit the Exact URL First?

Some consumers are choosing to go directly to a business?s website as an alternative to search engines. Surprisingly, 62 percent were specifically typing a business?s URL as means to find more information. Business owners should consider their domain name as their virtual address. The name should be short and concise while communicating the business name specifically. While ?.com? domains are most common, your business name may not be available with the popular domain extension. If this is the case, consider other alternative messages including the industry or your most popular product/service. No matter which option you choose, you want to make sure it is clear what your company does and it will be a name that customers will remember.

Social Media is a Popular Research Tool

When taking your business to the next level it is important to pay attention to the trends consumers are currently adopting. A leading and evolving trend that has proven its staying power is social media. As brands such as Facebook and Twitter make their way into everyday language, it is beneficial for businesses to interact with potential customers though these platforms. 1&1?s research proved that 37 percent of consumers have used social media to find new businesses to work with. Directing attention to your company?s Facebook page establishes both credibility and visibility for potential customers. These sites are checked on a daily basis and normally bookmarked on computers and mobile devices by consumers providing ample opportunities for consumers to see and learn about your business.?

Furthermore, less than half (48 percent) of consumers are using the newspaper to discover new businesses. Social media platforms are taking over how consumers get the latest news, event listings and sales. Most networks are free of charge and include a step by step installation process, ensuring that even the most novices of beginners can benefit.

23 Percent Trust Online Directories over Phonebooks?

When evaluating your online representation, it is important to align your marketing strategy to where consumers are looking. This includes online directories. Nearly a quarter of Americans (23 percent) are trading in their physical phonebook for online directories. These are forums for you to list your businesses where potential customers can see basic information, including business name, URL and contact information.

The Internet is already a great source of information and avenue to answer consumer questions on a regular basis. If they are traveling to a new area, just moved or looking to try something new, a simple search online is the first step to solve consumer?s problem. Getting listed on online directories will immediately increase your visibility to potential customers.

Traditional marketing efforts are commonly thought of as the industry standard when a new business is launched. Appearing in local newspapers, radio and local promotion used to be the only option for a new business. However, the heavy reliance on the Internet has changed consumers? behaviors. Only 33 percent of consumers are influenced by local promotions while an even smaller number, 28 percent, are influenced by radio mentions when searching for businesses. Whether you have an existing website for your business or are starting from scratch, it is important to make the most of your business?s online visibility. Implementing these online initiatives will help consumers find and become more familiar with your company, increasing your credibility and overall customer traffic.

Female Afghan cops say fellow officers rape them

Omar Sobhani / Reuters

Afghan policewomen prepare to fire during a shooting exercise at a range at the Afghan National Police Academy in Kabul Dec. 9.

By Amie Ferris-Rotman, Reuters

KABUL - Shortly after Friba joined the Afghan National Police, she gave herself the nickname "dragon" and vowed to bring law and order to her tormented homeland.

Five years later, she is tired of rebuffing the sexual advances of male colleagues, worries the budget for the female force will shrink and fears the government will abandon them.

Women in the police force were held up as a showcase for Afghan-Western efforts to promote rights in the new Afghanistan, born from the optimism that swept the country after the ouster of the Taliban in 2001.

Images of gun-wielding Afghan policewomen have been broadcast across the globe, even inspiring a television program popular with young Afghan women.

But going from the burqa to the olive green uniform has not been easy.

In Reuters interviews with 12 policewomen in districts across the Afghan capital, complaints of sexual harassment, discrimination and bitter frustration were prevalent.

President Hamid Karzai's goal is for 5,000 women to join the Afghan National Police (ANP) by the end of 2014, when most foreign troops will leave the country.

Watch Atia Abawi's full, exclusive interview with Afghanistan's President Hamid Karzai in which he discusses the "growing perception" that insecurity in the region is caused by the United States and some of its allies who "promoted lawlessness" and "corruption" in Afghanistan.

UN calls for Afghanistan to protect women from rape, forced marriage

But government neglect, poor recruitment and a lack of interest on the part of authorities and the male-dominated society mean there are only 1,850 female police officers on the beat, or about 1.25 percent of the entire force.

And it looks to get worse.

Friba, who asked that her second name not be used, says it all when she runs a manicured finger across her throat: "Once foreigners leave we won't even be able to go to the market. We'll be back in burqas. The Taliban are coming back and we all know it."

Conditions for women in Afghanistan have improved significantly since the Taliban were ousted. Women have won back basic rights in voting, education and work since Taliban rule, when they were not allowed out of their homes without a male escort and could be publicly stoned to death for adultery.

Newlywed beheaded for her refusal to become a prostitute

But problems persist in the deeply conservative Muslim society scarred by decades of conflict. The United Nations said this month that despite progress, there was a dramatic under-reporting of cases of violence against women.

Some female lawmakers and rights groups blame Karzai's government for a waning interest in women's rights as it seeks peace talks with the Taliban, accusations his administration deny.

Almost a third of the members of the female force work in Kabul, performing duties such as conducting security checks on women at the airport and checking biometric data.

Friba sat in a city police station room decorated with posters of policemen clutching weapons to talk to Reuters.

"I am the dragon and I can defend myself, but most of the girls are constantly harassed," she said. "Just yesterday my colleague put his hands on one of the girl's breasts. She was embarrassed and giggled while he squeezed them. Then she turned to us and burst into tears."

More than ten years after the beginning of the war, Afghanistan faces external pressure to reform as well as ongoing internal conflicts.

Afghan woman police director gunned down

On the other side of Kabul, detective Lailoma, who also asked that her family name not be used, said several policewomen under her command had been raped by their male colleagues.

She complained about male colleagues: "They want it to be like the time of the Taliban. They tell us every day we are bad women and should not be allowed to work here."

Male colleagues also taunt the women, she added, often preventing them from entering the kitchen, meaning they miss out on lunch.

US, Afghan officials condemn public execution of Afghan woman

On several occasions, male colleagues interrupted Reuters interviews in what the policewomen said were attempts to intimidate them into silence.

One male officer entered the room without knocking three times to retrieve pencils; another spent 20 minutes dusting off his hat, only to put it back on a shelf. The women switched subjects when the men came in.

Rana, a 31-year-old, heavy-set policewoman with curly hair, said policewomen were expected to perform sexual favors: "We're expected to do them to just stay in the force."

The raping of policewomen by their male counterparts "definitely takes place," said Colonel Sayed Omar Saboor, deputy director for gender and human rights at the Interior Ministry, which oversees the police. "These men are largely illiterate and see the women as immoral."?

Private company to offer rides to moon by 2020

Golden Spike says it hopes to sell missions to the moon for over $1 billion.

By Clara Moskowitz,?SPACE.com / December 7, 2012

The company, called Golden Spike (after the final spike built into the First Transcontinental Railroad), plans to sell each moon mission for about $1.5 billion ? a relative bargain, said the company's president and CEO Alan Stern, a former director of NASA?s Science Mission Directorate.

For the same price as many unmanned robotic missions, Golden Spike will provide a round trip for two humans to the moon.

"We're selling to nations, corporations and individuals," Stern told SPACE.com. "Get in line ? and I think it's going to be a long one." [How Golden Spike's Moon Landing Plan Works (Infographic )]

Stern and Golden Spike's chairman of the board of directors, Gerry Griffin, a former Apollo flight director and NASA Johnson Space Center director, announced their plans today at the National Press Club in Washington, D.C.

Shopping for a rocket

The company's leaders have not yet chosen a launch vehicle or space capsule to transport their passengers; Stern expects to make the final selections in 2014.

To keep costs low, Golden Spike will likely use existing or already-under-development rockets and spacecraft. However, the company will need to commission its own lunar lander and specially designed spacesuits. Stern called rumors that Golden Spike had already chosen SpaceX's Falcon 9 Heavy rocket "not true."

The company has been in the works, and under wraps, for two and a half years, Stern said.

"I don?t think anybody's got us beat," he added. "This is state-of-the-art cool."

The missions are being targeted at countries without their own space agencies or that can't afford to launch people to the moon independently, as well as scientific organizations and even private individuals looking to take the trip of a lifetime.

"We have spoken to space agencies from both Asian and European countries and found real interest," Stern said.

Buying Energy Efficient Appliances ? UK Home Improvement Blog

Studies and various reports have shown that energy use in the home result in pollution more than cars. This is mainly because the energy used in homes is produced by fossil burning power plants. You should know that air pollution leads to global warming. One way that homes can reduce their contribution to air pollution is by the use of appliances and gadgets that are energy efficient. The use of energy efficient appliances reduces both air pollution and even the energy bills.

Saving energy means saving money. If you intend to purchase home appliances, here are some useful suggestions. Take some time to find out the energy consumption of the appliance that you intend to purchase. Even if you spend a lot of money on a model which is energy-efficient, you will be reducing your utility bill.

All appliances look similar from the outside, and so prior to buying one, determine the space it will occupy at home or in the office. If you plan to purchase a fridge for instance, ensure there is enough room to be able to fully open the door. Therefore consider the style and size of every appliance before you purchase it.

Prior to purchasing a home appliance, go through the black and yellow energy guide label which is often attached to many of the newest appliances. The label shows the quantity of energy used by an appliance in a yearly basis. Before you buy an appliance, compare the efficiency of different brands. Several brands offer cash rebates for promoting their products and encourage people to purchase energy efficient appliances.

Energy Star Appliances

USA set the international standard in 1992 for energy efficiency appliances such as consumer products. The standard called ?Energy Star? was adopted by countries like the European Union, New Zealand, Japan, New, Taiwan and Australia.

The Environment Protection Agency together with the Department of Energy in the US established a label called ?Energy Star? to aid consumers in saving cash on energy bills and in minimizing air pollution.
Some of the appliances having the logo of ?Energy Star? include dryers, dishwashers, air conditioners, refrigerators, washing machines, energy saving lights and kettles. An appliance is said to be efficient in energy consumption if the energy it needs is below the minimal energy that is set by the government agencies, and is then given the symbol of an ?Energy Star?. Such rated appliances are becoming common in the market today.
Some appliances that account for 20% energy consumption are dishwashers, refrigerators and washing machines. A refrigerator that is energy efficient consumes energy less than a 75-watt bulb that is left to run continuously, therefore it is wise to buy one with the ?Energy Star? symbol.

You may save cash on the energy utility bills if you use energy saving appliances. This not only saves on the energy bills but reduce air pollution too.

Jed York Visits The Jim Rome Show

Posted by Taylor Price on December 18, 2012 ? 12:38 PM

Jed York covered a number of topics in a Tuesday morning interview on The Jim Rome Show, guest hosted by Bay Area radio and 49ers Pregame Show host Damon Bruce.

It?s a must-listen for all Faithful fans looking for insight from the San Francisco 49ers CEO. York first explained his reaction to seeing Tom Brady lead four consecutive touchdown drives to tie last Sunday?s 49ers game at 31.

San Francisco?s CEO explained that he was with family and a couple of friends from the Boston area in the team owner?s suite when things started to get too close for comfort.

?Even at 31-3,? York told Bruce, ?I didn?t have a good feeling in my stomach because of Tom Brady? You knew they were going to click ? you knew they were going to make a run.?

The Patriots made their run, but it wasn?t enough to derail the confidence and toughness of the 49ers, who responded with several key plays in the game?s closing moments to win 41-34 going away.

?It was an emotional roller-coaster of a game for me,? York admitted, saying he tries not to be emotional on gameday. ?I try not to be, but when you go from 31-3 to 31-31, it was a little tense.?

York?s interview then switched gears towards his position in the front office. The 49ers CEO said he serves on the league?s Digital Media Committee, a fitting designation with his role in the development of the new Santa Clara Stadium.

?We want to make sure not that the 49ers are great, but that the NFL improves overall,? explained York as he discussed the team?s vision to improve in-game entertainment by empowering fan?s usage of personal technologies like smart phones and tablets. ?I think we can keep getting better.?

?I do think we need to improve the in-game experience,? he added. ?We need to make sure the experience is better than what is been in the past.?

York?s goal is to continue cultivating the best visionaries in the team?s front office from the Silicon Valley to help create the best outdoor entertainment venue in the world.

?We can pick from the greatest brains and minds out here to give our fans an experience unmatched when they?re at the game,? York stated.

Another interesting note from the 49ers CEO pertained to the possibility of hosting Super Bowl L (50) at the 49ers future home.

The City of San Francisco is in competition with the So. Florida/Miami committee for hosting rights to the 50th edition of the Big Game.

If San Francisco loses the bid, they?ll go in direct competition with Houston for the rights to host Super Bowl LI (51).

York and Bruce?s conversation switched to more football topics like the CEO?s thoughts on the 49ers midseason quarterback change and his take on this year?s Notre Dame football team.

The proud Fighting Irish alum said he hired Jim Harbaugh to who help guide the offense, in particular, the quarterback position.

?I don?t stick my nose into football decisions,? York said. ?Coach made a decision and I support our coach.?

As for Notre Dame?s upcoming appearance in the BCS Championship Game, York is eagerly anticipating the big game against Alabama.

Bruce wrapped up the interview asking York what?s keeping him up more night these days ? his newborn son Jaxon, his college playing Alabama in the BCS title game or preparing for Seattle this Sunday night.

The 49ers CEO picked the third option.

?Jax sleeps great so I know it?s not that one,? York said. ?I?ve been in Seattle too many times to know it?s a tough environment? It?ll probably be more difficult than last week.?

What's New: Canada ranked as worst performer in the developed world on climate change

Canada won a sad distinction today, falling? to 58th?place out of 61 countries analyzed for their policies and action on climate change this year, trailed only by Kazakhstan, Iran, and Saudi Arabia, according to Climate Action Network Canada (CANC).? Here's what CANC has to say on the matter:

The annual Climate Change Performance Index is released by Germanwatch and Climate Action Network Europe and is based on an analysis of government climate policy in each country.

?At a time when institutions such as the World Bank and the International Energy Agency are calling for more climate action it is disappointing to have so many countries still being reluctant to move forward. Canada is a strong example of this lack of willingness to improve climate policies,? said Wendel Trio, Director of the European Climate Action Network.

The report examines current emissions levels, development of emissions, renewable energy, efficiency, and climate policy. Canada scores the lowest ranking of ?very poor? with respect to current emissions, renewable energy, and climate policy. On efficiency Canada is given a ranking of ?poor?, and in development of emissions a ranking of ?good,? with a strong caveat that it is not cause for celebration if progress in some sectors is completely negated by soaring emissions from the oil and gas sector.

The report also notes that in light of recent extreme weather events as well as sobering reports on the world?s current pathway towards 4 degrees of global warming, no developed country is doing their fair share when it comes to action on climate change.

?Canada has become the poster child for climate inaction, which represents a really long fall from where we were less than a decade ago,? says Patrick Bonin of Greenpeace Canada. ?It has been hard to watch the unraveling of a rational and reasonable approach to science, while at the same time seeing more devastating extreme weather impacts all around us, it just makes you wonder what it is going to take for this government to get it.?

Environment Canada reports show that the government does not have the policies in place necessary to meet their current goals, which have been widely criticized for being among the weakest in the industrialized world. Canada was the only country to weaken its climate target under the Copenhagen Accord and has since become the only country to withdrawal from the Kyoto Protocol. This indifference and inaction in the face of global climate change has drawn sharp criticism from leaders around the world.

The report comes as Ministers and high-level officials arrive in Doha, Qatar for the conclusion of this year?s United Nations climate change conference. Canada has also been singled out at these negotiations for failing to live up to commitments to support poorer countries as they adapt to a problem they did nothing to create.

?The world has had enough of Canada?s inaction on climate change ? it is clear that this government?s reckless fixation on the tar sands is going to cost us not only a safe and healthy future and economy for our children, but also our international credibility,? says Steven Guilbeault of Equiterre

Cream of the crop: Sandwich chips combining the best of two technologies

Dec. 18, 2012 ? Two Leibniz institutes broke new technological ground and successfully combined their -- up to now separate -- technology worlds. Due to their high performance the novel chips developed within the HiTeK project promises to open up new applications.

Wolfgang Heinrich and Bernd Tillack are convinced of holding the key to faster and more powerful terahertz chips. The two scientists and their teams come from the Berlin-based Ferdinand-Braun-Institut (FBH) and from the IHP-Leibniz-Institut f?r innovative Mikroelektronik in Frankfurt/Oder -- and thus from two different technology worlds. FBH is one of the leading institutes in developing III-V semiconductors, while IHP is specialized in silicon-based systems and circuits. Both Leibniz institutes joined forces within the HiTeK project to combine the advantages of silicon-based CMOS (Complementary Metal Oxide Semiconductor) circuits from the IHP with those of indium-phosphide circuits from the FBH. The partners now accomplished an important step within the project by successfully integrating both circuits on a semiconductor wafer, with measurement results demonstrating their high performance. With the integration on one chip, new ambitious applications in the THz range are within reach such as high-resolution imaging systems for medical and security technology as well as ultra-broadband mobile communication applications.

For such applications high output powers along with faster computer processors are needed offering enhanced computer operation per second. In order to achieve this, circuits on the chips have to become smaller -- the key reason which boosts miniaturization in semiconductor industry. If the frequency range around 100 gigahertz and beyond is to be covered, however, the breakdown voltage in the CMOS switching circuits decreases significantly. Accordingly, the available output power of the chips declines, which implies that the capability to generate sufficiently strong signals to establish a radio link and to detect material defects becomes insufficient. To find a solution for this problem, IHP conducts research on bipolar CMOS based on silicon-germanium enhancing the breakdown voltages at high speed compared to pure CMOS. By combining a standard CMOS circuit with a second indium-phosphide circuit promises further improvement. Both circuits are realized "sandwich-like" on top of each other. Where the traditional silicon-based CMOS technology reaches its limits, this novel material combination delivers the desired properties: high output powers at high frequencies. The sandwich chips allow to keep benefiting from the high level of production routine and integration of CMOS circuits -- particularly regarding the fact that 95 % of all digital and analogue-digital circuits base on this technology.

"It was particularly challenging to make both technologies compatible at the interfaces," underlines Wolfgang Heinrich from the FBH. To achieve this, the whole development environment of both processes as, for example, the software for the circuit layout had to be merged in a first step. Subsequently, both layers had to be dimensioned so that they reach the essential good transmission properties for frequencies around 200 gigahertz. Precision work was also highly demanded to adjust the circuits precisely to each other with an accuracy of less than 10 micrometers. Heinrich is especially proud of the friction-less cooperation: "We managed to align both technology worlds so smoothly that the circuits deliver fully the specified high-frequency performance. This also demonstrates what added value can be created by bundling the competencies of two institutes like IHP and FBH."

The next steps are now to further stabilize the process and to optimize the circuits. A follow-up project has already been granted. This way, the potential of the hybrid chips shall be exploited fully to reach the borders of what is feasible -- thus setting the stage for the novel sandwich circuits to be integrated in sophisticated applications soon.

'Survivor' shocker: Who won the $1 million?

CBS

"Survivor: Philippines" final four.

By Bruna Nessif, E! Online

The sole survivor and winner of $1 million from this season of "Survivor: Philippines" was named Sunday night, but not before two-hours of struggles, challenges, sweat and tears.

Lisa Whelchel, Michael Skupin, Malcolm Freberg and Denise Stapley made it to the final four, but all anyone was thinking about now was who would be cut when it came to the three going to the final. It seemed like Denise was the likely competitor to get the boot. Was she??

Before we found out, they faced their first challenge, which required each person to race through an obstacle course and collect three bags that contained puzzle pieces. It's always a puzzle! The first person to complete the dragon puzzle would win an advantage in the final Immunity Challenge the next night.

"Survivor's" Jeff Probst talks sharing custody with Mark-Paul Gosselaar

Michael and Malcolm were off to a good start, until it came to untying knots. That's when Denise zoomed by and it was neck-and-neck between the three of them with Lisa falling behind. However, it wasn't about who got the bags fastest, it was all about the puzzle, and everything seemed to be going in Denise's favor because she was killin' it.?

But nope, it was Malcolm who won (duh). So the guy who was already a huge threat, was an even bigger threat. Back to the final three discussion -- where do the alliances stand? Malcolm refused to commit to his lady Denise, so she went off to Lisa to form something with her, and then told Skupin that she decided to turn against Malcolm. Whaaat?!

The top reality shows of 2012

Mike and Lisa formed a pact with both Malcolm and Denise without the other person knowing, so they were in a pretty sweet spot. For now. The sad part was they wanted Denise because they felt so strongly that she was beatable. Yes, smart thinking, but still sad.?

Before backs started getting stabbed, the foursome did the Lost Comrades Walk, to remember those who were sent home this season. Once that trip down memory lane was over, it was back to the game and time for the last Immunity Challenge. And boy was it a doozy. Each player had a cylinder block that was cut into several pieces. With two handlebars, they had to hold a piece up in the air while balancing a ball on the block. Every five minutes, they'd add more blocks and attempt to balance the ball again. If at any point the ball fell, they were out. Deep breath.

Top 10 TV OMG moments of 2012

Don't forget! Malcolm won the advantage, which was revealed as a second chance. If his ball dropped, he would get a free reset. Good thing for that, too, because he was the first to drop his ball, causing everyone to start that round all over again. And yet again, a shaky Malcolm failed the challenge and was the first person out. Told you, this was intense.

Denise was the second person out, leaving Mike and Lisa up for immunity. After what seemed like a lifetime of wobbly arms, wind slightly moving the ball, close-ups of Mike's stomach sweat and Jeff Probst commentary every two seconds, Lisa dropped her ball, giving Michael immunity and a spot in the final three.?

"Survivor's" Lisa Whelchel has West Nile Virus

Now Mike was facing a dilemma: Should he stick with Denise or Malcolm in the finals? On the one hand, Denise would be easier to beat. On the other hand, Skupin's competitive, male ego really wanted to face-off with Malcolm in a head-to-head battle to see who would win in the end.

Once at Tribal Council, Denise voted for Malcolm and vice versa (obvious), Lisa made it clear she wanted Malcolm out, so the vote that really mattered was Mike's. Was he going to take the favored road and boot his strongest competitor or let his ego take over? Well, if you were hoping to see Mike and Malcolm battle it out in the finals, sorry, it won't happen.

The final three are Lisa, Mike and Denise, with Malcolm joining the jury.

Lisa Whelchel breaks down on "Survivor: Philippines": "Maybe I'm just not able to play the game"

After a hearty breakfast, full of sausage, bacon, peppers and orange juice (to name a few things), the trio faced the jury at the last Tribal Council.

During opening statements, Denise, Lisa and Mike each discuss their similar yet also somewhat different tactics on what got them to the finals, but it was pretty much a bunch of talk that we already expected. It was during the jury questioning that things got a little saucy. Veteran Jonathan Penner revealed Lisa's child star past -- gasp! So did that change things up?

Possibly, because when the votes were tallied and all was said and done, it was Denise who won it all.

Were you happy with the results?! Let us know on?Facebook!

Movie review: Hopkins cuts a fine figure in 'Hitchcock' | The Salt ...

This film image released by Fox Searchlight shows Anthony Hopkins as Alfred Hitchcock in "Hitchcock." (AP Photo/Fox Searchlight, Suzanne Tenner)

Review ? Story behind ?Psycho? a fun time for movie lovers.

"Hitchcock" is a movie lover?s movie ? a fun, free-wheeling look at the creation of a classic movie and a tender profile of the little-known life of a Hollywood legend.

Of course, the legend is Alfred Hitchcock, and director Sacha Gervasi and screenwriter John J. McLaughlin catch the "Master of Suspense" at a suspenseful crossroads. As the movie begins, it?s 1959 and Hitchcock (played by Anthony Hopkins) is coming off the success of his latest film, "North by Northwest," and casting about for his next project.

?

HHH

?Hitchcock?

Anthony Hopkins impersonates the great director in a behind-the-scenes drama loaded with treats for movie lovers.

Where ? Broadway Centre Cinemas.

When ? Opens Friday, Dec. 14.

Rating ? PG-13 for some violent images, sexual content and thematic material.

Running time ? 96 minutes.

The studios, being studios, offer him variations on the tried-and-true. (He rejects a pitch to adapt Ian Fleming?s "Casino Royale," with Cary Grant as James Bond, saying, "I?ve already made that movie. It?s called ?North by Northwest.??") Instead, he becomes fascinated with Robert Bloch?s novel about a murderer, based on the real-life case of killer Ed Gein. The novel?s title: Psycho.

The studios are repulsed by the idea, saying they won?t bankroll what is essentially a schlocky B-grade horror movie. But Hitchcock persists, arguing that horror movies are deemed unworthy because a really good director has never made one.

Hitchcock has support in his corner: his agent, Lew Wasserman (Michael Stuhlbarg), and, most important, his wife, Alma Reville (Helen Mirren). Alma is Hitch?s toughest critic, best sounding board, shrewdest editor and smartest casting director (she suggests Hitchcock cast Janet Leigh ? smartly played here by Scarlett Johansson ? based on her performance in Orson Welles? "Touch of Evil"). She also has endured decades of Hitchcock?s obsessions over blond starlets and the slights that come with life in the great man?s shadow.

Mirren is utterly winning as Alma, even though she?s saddled with the movie?s silliest melodrama. This involves Alma, feeling left out of Hitchcock?s world, spending time on a writing project with an old acquaintance, screenwriter Whitfield Cook (Danny Huston) ? who may have amorous intentions toward her.

The best parts of "Hitchcock" come when Gervasi (whose previous credit is the rock documentary "Anvil! The Story of Anvil") immerses us in the life on the set. Johansson is joined by solid performances from James D?Arcy (as the nervous and deeply closeted Anthony Perkins) and Jessica Biel (as co-star Vera Miles, a former Hitchcock favorite reduced to second-tier status). Movie fans will gobble up the rich backstage details of filming "Psycho" and Hitchcock?s efforts to get it past the censors. And Gervasi has embedded sly references to eight Hitchcock classics, just for the heck of it.

Mostly, "Hitchcock" lets Sir Anthony Hopkins play while we watch. His impersonation of the director?s avuncular cadences is dead-on, his chemistry with Mirren is charming, and his connection to Ed Gein (who also was an inspiration for "The Silence of the Lambs") adds a layer of ironic wit. Somewhere, Hitch is probably enjoying a good chuckle.

Extending Einstein's ideas: New kind of quantum entanglement demonstrated

Dec. 14, 2012 ? Physicists at the University of Calgary and at the Institute for Quantum Computing in Waterloo have published new research in Nature Physics which builds on the original ideas of Einstein and adds a new ingredient: a third entangled particle.

Quantum entanglement is one of the central principles of quantum physics, which is the science of sub-atomic particles. Multiple particles, such as photons, are connected with each other even when they are very far apart and what happens to one particle can have an effect on the other one at the same moment, even though these effects can not be used to send information faster than light.

The new form of three-particle entanglement demonstrated in this experiment, which is based on the position and momentum properties of photons, may prove to be a valuable part of future communications networks that operate on the rules of quantum mechanics, and could lead to new fundamental tests of quantum theory that deepen our understanding of the world around us.

"This work opens up a rich area of exploration that combines fundamental questions in quantum mechanics and quantum technologies," says Christoph Simon, paper co-author and researcher at the University of Calgary.

This research extends the theories of Einstein, seventy-seven years later. In 1935, Albert Einstein, Boris Podolsky, and Nathan Rosen, commonly referred to as EPR, published a thought experiment designed to show that quantum mechanics, by itself, is not sufficient to describe reality.

Using two entangled particles EPR tried to demonstrate that there must be some hidden parameters that quantum mechanics does not account for. Later John Bell and others showed that the kind of hidden parameters EPR had in mind are incompatible with our observations. The mystery at the heart of quantum mechanics thus remains intact. But the entanglement first proposed by EPR is now a valuable resource in emerging quantum technologies like quantum computing, quantum cryptography, and quantum precision measurements.

"It is exciting, after all this time, to be able to finally create, control, and entangle, quantum particles in this new way. Using these new states of light it may be possible to interact with and entangle distant quantum computer memories based on exotic atomic gases, " says Thomas Jennewein, whose group at the University of Waterloo carried out the experiment.

The next step for the researchers is to try to combine the position and momentum entanglement between their three photons with more traditional types of entanglement based on angular momentum. This will allow the creation of hybrid quantum systems that combine multiple unique properties of light at the same time.

VA Property Financial loan With Negative Credit score ... - JLPT Study

Thankfully, nevertheless, it can be simpler to obtain the eco-friendly gentle over a VA house financial loan with terrible credit score than from any typical home finance loan supplier.

This is certainly great news, but there's no these matter as free of charge cash. Fulfilling loan company standards is usually needed, but specially when trying to get approval irrespective of a reduced credit score ranking.

But so long as finances are in rather great buy and evidence of provider from the armed forces is offered, there exists tiny problems in qualifying for consideration. After which, when the containers are ticked, the likelihood of securing the VA residence bank loan are robust.

Essential Qualifying Requirements

Like each other variety of mortgage, obtaining a VA property personal loan with undesirable credit score boils down to gratifying the qualifying standards which the financial institution lays down. In terms of the VA, there are a selection of requirements that instant payday loans increase further than the conventional earnings associated situations.

Certainly, an applicant ought to be possibly a present-day or even a previous member in the armed service. That features, don't just the armed forces, but in addition if time was served during the Countrywide Guard or simply as being a reservist. Having approval in spite of a reduced credit score ranking can be done when there is evidence of no late financial loan repayments or personal bankruptcy inside a selected interval.

A different situation is the fact the house to become purchased aided by the VA property mortgage would be to become a key home of your household customer. So, somebody looking for to get a summer months house or to purchase real estate for leasing uses are unable to qualify.

Earnings and Reimbursement

Not surprisingly, the principle affliction for every mortgage is evidence of the common revenue. Whilst there are lots of gains out there for any person trying to find a VA property financial loan with terrible credit score, it truly is equally as essential for an applicant to verify they're gainfully utilized. This generally usually means delivering affirmation with fork out slips or possibly a lender account record.

Even so, it is only 50 percent the prerequisite. It is usually essential to present an capacity to fulfill the repayments on a monthly basis, which is often a small difficult to do. The debt-to-income ratio is utilized to compute this, with loan companies not enabling the ratio to exceed forty:sixty. What this means is that, to obtain approval inspite of a very low credit score ranking, it's important to demonstrate only 40% with the readily available revenue is taken up by financial debt repayments.

It can be potential to qualify to get a VA household financial loan in case the present obligations are reduced plenty of to guarantee a wholesome ratio exists. Even so, should the personal debt is simply too significantly, the appliance is ready to become rejected.

Locating a Loan provider

It is necessary to make note of that, whilst acquiring a VA dwelling bank loan with lousy credit score is usually a good deal additional probably than the usual typical house loan, apps are certainly not created on the VA alone. Alternatively, it's important to visit home finance loan supplier, who'll then submit the applying to your VA on your own behalf. The theory is the fact that significantly in the paperwork is then held away from the fingers on the VA.

In almost any instance, the advantages to become appreciated increase to your quarter of your volume borrowed getting secured by VA, thus permitting the rate of interest to get reduced and eliminating any need to have for your deposit. Obviously, this tends to make it much easier to get approval inspite of a lower credit score score.

Even so, it's important to search out a loan provider with superior conditions initially, and convincing them to approve the applying could be the very first phase to obtaining a VA property financial loan. So, pick the financial institution meticulously.

HUNTINGTON BEACH, Calif. (AP) ? The tide is high, and it's holding on.

Some Californians were in for another day of ankle-deep seawater in low-lying coastal communities Friday as unusually high "king tides" pulled the Pacific farther ashore than normal.

The tides, the result of an occasional astronomical alignment, caused some damage Thursday but proved mostly just a nuisance.

Water flooded Pacific Coast Highway and side streets in Sunset Beach, a sliver of Huntington Beach between the ocean and a yacht harbor. Down the Southern California coast, Newport Bay was brimming, while just north of San Francisco the tide swamped a commuter parking lot in Marin City and seeped into dozens of cars.

Bruce DuAmarell, an 18-year Sunset Beach resident, said he got a call at work from an alarmed neighbor and came home.

"My garage had flooded. There were four to five inches in my garage," he said, as he took a break from sweeping water onto the street. "It came up over the seawall and literally filled up the harbor."

DuAmarell said he lost a vacuum cleaner and some Christmas presents for his children, but otherwise was unscathed.

Occurring several times a year, king tides happen when the Earth, moon and sun align in a way that increases gravitational pull on the Earth's oceans, raising water levels several feet above normal high tides. The non-scientific term also refers to extremely low tides.

Residents of Sunset Beach expect flooding, but that didn't keep 13-year resident Fred Grether out of trouble.

He tried to drive his 2004 Porsche to a car wash to rinse off the salt water after the flooding reached the rims and undercarriage. But driving to the car wash did more damage than staying put, he said as a tow truck prepared to haul his car to the shop.

"I didn't realize how deep it was at the intersection and as soon as I got to the intersection, I heard this frizzling noise and my car alarm started going off and I realized that I had burned out the electrical system on my car," he said.

"Now I'm off to my local mechanic today about me doing something very, very stupid," said Grether, who's seen flooding three times.

The tide at Marin City reached 7 feet, slightly higher than during last December's king tides, which prompted the California Highway Patrol to temporarily close a local highway connector ramp due to roadway flooding midmorning.

The damage could have been much worse if the weather had brought big waves along with the high tides, National Weather Service forecaster Larry Smith said.

"Right now it's just a neat thing.... When we have the low tide this afternoon you will be see father out than you normally would," Smith said. "It kind of does give you a glimpse of what the future might be with the sea level rise."

The tides reached over 10 feet in Redwood City, a bit above predicted levels, the National Weather Service said.

The event provided organizers of the California King Tides Initiative an opportunity to get California residents thinking about and preparing for the future. The 3-year-old initiative, sponsored by government and nonprofit groups, enlists camera-toting volunteers to photograph the King Tides as an illustration of what low-lying coastal areas could look like if predictions about the Earth's climate come to pass.

As of Thursday afternoon, about 100 new snapshots had been uploaded to the photo-sharing project, coordinator Heidi Nuttles said.

"It's definitely very high tides this year, and we just encourage people to use this opportunity to go out, take pictures and reflect what this means for our shoreline and the fact that's its constantly changing even today, and how that might affect how we think about sea level rise in the future," Nuttles said.
