Obama Does Vegas With Katy Perry and Trip to Bellagio

LAS VEGAS - Pop star Katy Perry and 13,000 Nevadans rocked together for President Obama under the stars at a midnight ET rally here to close out the first day of Obama's whirlwind two-day campaign blitz.

Perry, wearing a skin-tight, white dress designed as a ballot, urged the crowd to vote for Obama - and vote early. She sang a full set of her hits, complete with back-up dancers, full concert lighting and a digital backdrop that showcased pictures of Obama and his slogan "Forward."

Obama hailed Perry has "just a wonderful young lady" and said at the top of his remarks that he had the honor of meeting her grandmother backstage - and that she got some of her lipstick on him.

"Fortunately somebody wiped it off before Michelle saw it," Obama said with a big grin.

Perry's grandmother, who is 91 years old, watched Obama's remarks from a chair in the middle of the concert stage as the singer stood nearby. ABC News asked her about the kiss backstage after the event and she said it was "wonderful."

The Vegas stop was the fourth of the day for Obama, who is on a 48-hour, 4500-mile campaign tour through eight states.

"We are pulling an all-nighter. No sleep. And if you're not gonna sleep, you might as well be in Vegas," Obama said.

After the event on his way to the airport, the president made an surprise visit to the Bellagio Hotel, where he greeted hundreds of hotel and casino workers crowded inside.

"Everyone here knows what it means to work hard," he told them. "You're what makes Las Vegas run. You're what makes the strip run."

"I need you guys to go out and vote now. Don't wait to vote," Obama added. "You gotta go cash in your chips now."

The president flies overnight - sleeping on Air Force One - to Tampa, Fla., where he holds an event Thursday morning.

Longtime MMA figure Jeff Blatnick dies

Jeff Blatnick, a longtime figure in MMA as a judge, official and announcer, died after complications from heart surgery at the age of 55.

Blatnick was involved with the UFC from its early days. He was the commentator for UFC 4 through UFC 32, and as UFC commissioner was instrumental in the sport's evolution into the regulated sport we know today. He stuck with the sport as a well-respected judge.

Nick Lembo, the head of the New Jersey State Athletic Control Board, remembered Blatnick as key to the growth of MMA.

"Jeff will always be a crucial part of the formation and growth of MMA. He was a great judge and even refereed here. Far more than that, he was one of the best men I ever was graced with the pleasure of calling my friend," Lembo said to Cagewriter.

"I just spoke to him last week when he was appointed as a judge by the State of Washington Commission to officiate December 8 for the UFC on FOX Show," UFC vice president of regulatory affairs Marc Ratner said via email. "Very sad. He was one of the pioneers of the sport and was there at the very beginning of MMA in 1993. He was involved in formulating the Unified Rules of MMA and was one of the top MMA judges in the world."

UFC president Dana White also remembered Blatnick by tweeting, "RIP Jeff Blatnick."

Before Blatnick started with MMA, he was a highly decorated wrestler. He qualified for the Olympic team in 1980, but didn't compete because of the boycott. In 1982, he was diagnosed with Hodgkins lymphoma. He fought back to make the Olympic team again, and Blatnick won Olympic gold in 1984. Though a return of cancer forced his retirement, he continued to support wrestling as a coach and commentator.

With election near, sober Romney on foreign policy

FILE - This Oct. 22, 2012 file photo shows Republican presidential candidate, former Massachusetts Gov. Mitt Romney making a point during the third presidential debate with President Barack Obama at Lynn University in Boca Raton, Fla. Romney's shift toward the center on foreign policy issues including Iran and the war in Afghanistan are a clear effort to attract independent voters. But he risks upsetting some conservatives in his own party, and possibly reinforcing the idea that he lacks strong convictions. (AP Photo/David Goldman, File)

(AP) ? Mitt Romney abruptly moderated his foreign policy positions in this week's debate on issues like ending the war in Afghanistan and averting another conflict in Iran, hoping to neutralize one of President Barack Obama's main strengths with the election only two weeks away. But the move toward the political center comes with potential pitfalls.

By abandoning several of his sharpest criticisms of Obama from the past several months, Romney risks upsetting some conservatives and reinforcing the allegation ? levied repeatedly by the president on Monday night ? that his positions lack conviction and leadership.

His aim was to appear sober and serious, a plausible commander in chief, by not engaging in saber-rattling for political points. By narrowing the gap between his positions and those of Obama, he also may have succeeded in giving undecided voters, particularly women, the impression that he would lead a war-weary America into another conflict only reluctantly.

Romney aides said both the tone and substance of their boss' arguments were intentional and that he carried with him into the debate a key piece of advice: Talk about peace.

The overarching goal, they said, was for Romney to look like a suitable commander. After adopting a more assertively militaristic tone to win the GOP nomination amid challenges from more conservative candidates, he sought at all costs to avoid appearing as a warmonger.

"I want to see peace," Romney said in his closing statement.

The shifts in the debate were stark for a candidate who only last week described Obama's foreign policy as "unraveling before our very eyes."

Unconditionally endorsing Obama's 2014 deadline for removing U.S. combat troops from Afghanistan, Romney reversed his opposition to what he had termed a "political" timetable that wasn't necessarily supported by U.S. generals on the ground. And he declared the president's troop surge in Afghanistan a success, after previously accusing Obama with removing too many troops too quickly.

On Iran, Romney stressed that efforts to dissuade the Islamic Republic from developing a nuclear weapon should be "through peaceful and diplomatic means." That came after spending the past year-and-a-half lambasting Obama for failing to levy a credible military threat against Iran and spending too much time trying to rein in Israel's hawkish Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu. Monday night, Romney's said Obama's sanctions on Iran were working, calling war a last resort: "It is something one would only consider if all of the other avenues had been tried to their full extent."

And on Syria, Romney modified the argument for deeper involvement he had presented in a foreign policy address earlier this month in Virginia. He argued at that time for a concerted, U.S.-led approach to ensure that Syrian rebels obtain the weapons to defeat the Assad government's "tanks, helicopters and fighter jets." On Monday he adopted Obama's caution by emphasizing the need to ensure arms don't reach "the wrong hands" and stating unequivocally that he wouldn't pursue U.S. military involvement in the conflict.

He expressed his support "entirely" for the administration's escalated drone campaign against terrorist suspects overseas and said the president acted rightly in urging Egyptian strongman Hosni Mubarak to leave power despite three decades of close partnership with the United States.

Obama seized on Romney's shift, rather than his new agreeability.

"We are accustomed to seeing politicians change their position from four years ago," Obama told a Florida rally Tuesday. "We are not accustomed to seeing politicians change their positions from four days ago."

The new focus reflected Romney pitching his case to a changed audience. Having largely satisfied the Republican base over several grueling months of primary campaigning, Romney is now making a last-ditch appeal to women, independents and America's remaining undecided voters as the Nov. 6 election nears. National polls show the president and the challenger running neck and neck, with battleground states such as Ohio, Virginia and Florida ? the scene of Monday's debate ? perhaps proving pivotal.

Romney's move toward the center on foreign policy follows a similar shift he has tried to engineer on domestic issues. In recent weeks, he's softened his rhetoric on immigration, emphasized the importance of regulating Wall Street banks and used a TV ad to emphasize his support for abortion rights in instances of rape and incest and if the mother's health is threatened, all risky positions in a GOP primary battle.

While Romney continues to criticize Obama for military spending cuts, his decision not to visit Israel as president and for failing to challenge Chinese currency manipulation and intellectual property theft, talking up peace was a new wrinkle designed in part to broaden his appeal particularly to women.

During debate preparation, Romney's advisers looked to the first encounter between Ronald Reagan and President Jimmy Carter in 1980. Answering his first question in that debate, Reagan said: "Our first priority must be world peace, and that use of force is always and only a last resort, when everything else has failed."

Aides also urged Romney to follow Reagan in projecting optimism.

"I'm optimistic about our future," Romney said in his closing statement.

The strategy came as a surprise to some conservatives, who expected Romney to challenge Obama directly on some of the biggest foreign policy issues as he had with the economy, unemployment and debt in their first debate earlier this month. Republican commentators lamented Romney's use of "kid gloves" against Obama and his failure to challenge Obama on the Sept. 11 attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed a U.S. ambassador and three other Americans.

Libya seemed teed-up for Romney after weeks when he and other Republicans had hammered the administration for possible intelligence and security failures and a shifting message on how it happened.

Asked about the attack with the first question of the debate, Romney instead chose to focus on the larger challenges facing a Middle East in the throes of democratic transition and the continued threat posed by al-Qaida and Islamist extremism. After Obama parried by saying he was investigating the attack and going after the perpetrators, one of Romney's most obvious lines of attack was effectively eliminated from the discussion.

A Romney aide said the Libya issue was already clarified.

"The governor's made clear in many different forums and interviews that he believes that there are more questions than answers at this point," senior adviser Eric Fehrnstrom said. "He's covered that ground."

Aides said the candidate wanted to avoid any traps in territory that he was less familiar with, perhaps explaining the Republican's comfort in allowing the conversation to veer toward education, automobiles, job creation plans and other economic questions.

On many of these issues, Romney has outscored Obama in national polls. On foreign policy, the president has held an advantage. And Romney has struggled to establish his national security credentials after a problematic summer tour overseas that saw him offend his British hosts by questioning their security preparations for the Olympic Games and raise hackles among Palestinians who accused him of racism when he said culture was part of the reason Israelis were more economically successful than they.

October: Skin is IN | Health Blog

?

Or should I title this: Eczema: The gift that keeps giving?

Well, let?s celebrate it! (If you can?t beat it?) October is Eczema Awareness Month and recognizes this common inflammatory skin condition that affects approximately 15 million Americans.

That itch, that rash; no matter what you do, it will never permanently go away. Perhaps a skin cr?me here or there can temporarily calm the irritation, but it will never truly disappear. Perhaps it is worse in the colder months or perhaps worse when your respiratory allergies flare. Either way, it is annoying.

Eczema is characterized by a recurrent/chronic red, scaling, oozing and itching skin. Perhaps you have experienced eczema but never thought to review this uncomfortable condition with your doctor. Symptoms are simply irritating (literally).

However, in more severe cases (atopic dermatitis), discomfort can make for a poor quality of life especially if there is an additive bacterial infection complicating the condition. This scratchy rash affects both adults and children. I have cared for kids in my practice with atopic dermatitis that is so severe and physically debilitating that it causes them social isolation. Many people will develop more skin redness and irritation due to an infection in addition to inflammation.

If the steroid cr?me the doctor prescribes is not working, then it is time to take a different approach. In the old days, we would recommend a bleach bath. But that takes too much water and who has time for a daily bath anyway? Alternatives include using an antibacterial shower gel (CLN BodyWash is an effective product) which is a far more convenient and water-conserving method.

The cold months are coming, so keep the skin well-hydrated. If the dryness becomes more flakey, red and persistent, get to your doctor. If you are ?itching? to know more about eczema, refer to the web site www.nationaleczema.org.

Daily Barometer: Van Winkle develops voice, gravitas in her writing

?UHDS? Katie Van Winkle, an assistant coordinator for room management, was?featured in a front page article in OSU?s student newspaper (The Daily Barometer) on Thursday, Oct. 18.

[The Daily Barometer, Oct. 18, 2012] ??Just four minutes before the deadline Katie Van Winkle hit submit, entering her piece, titled ?Speak Up,? into the Muhammad Ali Writing Award on Ethics competition. Little did she know the 10-page narrative that took her only three hours to write would become a finalist and receive an honorable mention in the?Sala?Kryszek?Writing and Art Competition.
A self-professed ?shy writer,? Van Winkle began to develop her voice and writing style in the seventh grade when her English teacher, now mentor, Charles Sanderson, took notice of her special talent. He encouraged and pushed her to enter writing pieces into state and national writing competitions.

?Sanderson made me more willing to experiment with my writing,? Van Winkle said.

Last spring, it was Sanderson who gave Van Winkle the information about a writing contest sponsored by the Muhammad Ali Center. This national writing competition is held annually and offers awards to college students who honor and uphold Muhammad Ali?s legacy of living a life dedicated to high ethical standards.

Among the judges for this contest was?Elie?Wiesel. Esteemed author and Nobel Peace Prize winner, Wiesel has made a huge impact on Katie?s life. After reading ?Night,? Wiesel?s memoir about his experience during the Holocaust, Van Winkle began to understand the impact that stories and writing can have on others.

Van Winkle cherishes the opportunity to be judged by Wiesel.

?I feel really honored, he spoke up for his experiences and what he believes in,? Van Winkle said. ?I read ?Night,? in high school and learned so much from it. I feel humbled and honored. I?d [like to] ask him about courage, about the importance of speaking up for the things that you believe in.?

This competition and experience has given her confidence in her writing and in the knowledge she can make a difference with her words.

Van Winkle has made a difference. When she received news from Sanderson that the book, ?The House on Mango Street,? by Sandra Cisneros, was going to be pulled from her old school?s approved book list because it was considered to contain inappropriate content and language, she jumped into action.

She wrote an essay titled ?Saving Mango Street,? which was published in the magazine ?Rethinking Schools,? that then launched a letter writing campaign on Facebook. Van Winkle testified to the school board. Her efforts were successful. Van Winkle was able to help save the book that Sanderson had taught to her class years ago.

?[It] allowed the opportunity for valuable teaching moments about domestic abuse, violence against women and speaking out,? Van Winkle said.

Her winning essay ? ?Speak Out? ? was a narrative tying together her personal experience with sexual abuse, her involvement with CARDVA (Center Against Rape & Domestic Violence) and her efforts to save ?The House on Mango Street.? This ethics essay on women?s violence held a powerful message about speaking up and standing strong.

?If you don?t talk about it, people don?t know and can?t help,? Van Winkle said. ?I don?t want people to feel like it?s their fault or that they can?t talk about it or that they are alone.?

Looking to the future, Van Winkle says that she wants to become a counselor and to work with women and children who have been affected by domestic violence. She plans to continue to express herself and to communicate through writing.

?It is easier to communicate through writing verses statistics or numbers; writing really gets people to think [about] things or to change or to react,? Van Winkle said.

Those who have a story to tell, need someone to talk to or have experienced sexual abuse can contact CARDVA or CAPS (Counseling and Psychological Services).

?Basically, everybody has a story,? Van Winkle said.

AMD Never Settle bundle gives Radeon HD 7000 buyers free games they'd actually care to play

Just about anyone who has bought more than one aftermarket graphics card knows that bundled games rarely matter. They're usually year-old titles or neutered editions built only to showcase the GPU's performance for a few hours. AMD thinks its Never Settle bundle might finally get us to notice. Buy any modern Radeon HD video card from the 7770 GHz Edition on up and you'll get a download code for at least one new game you'd genuinely want to try, ranging from Far Cry 3 on basic cards to a full three-game deal that supplies Far Cry 3, Hitman: Absolution and Sleeping Dogs to high rollers buying the 7900 series. There's likewise a discount for Medal of Honor: Warfighter and promises of bundles in 2013 for Bioshock Infinite and the reimagined Tomb Raider. As long as you're not dead set on springing for a GeForce board in the next few months, one of the qualifying cards might be worth a look to jumpstart your game collection.

With some early planning and extra help from friends and family, budgeting for a new baby is not an impossible task.?Click through to read 6 tips to help you budget for a new baby:

1) Be Picky, But Not All At Once: There are a lot of baby products available and it can be easy to get caught up in feeling like you need all of it. To stick to your baby budget, buy only the large items you need (like a safe car seat) and start purchasing when you?re pregnant. If you space out the big purchases, you won?t notice such a huge hit to your budget.

2) Start While You?re Pregnant: Don?t wait to stock up on baby items like diapers for when the baby arrives, start early. Each week buy a pack of diapers (if you?re using disposable) or a reusable diaper and continue to do so for each week. Alternatively, you could purchase a $10 gift card for yourself each week to a large department store. That way, when baby arrives you will have 36-40 weeks worth of savings to use up.

3) Cut Back at Home: If you are looking for ways to increase your baby budget, look at cutting back on some of the extras in the house. If you have the highest cable package or have a home phone on top of cell phones, look at shaving some of those expenses off the house budget. Cut back on lunches and dinners out and opt for shopping grocery sales and you?ll be surprised by how much you could save.

4) Test Drive Single Income: If you will be taking maternity leave, test drive what it will be like to live on a smaller monthly income. Doing so will help you manage easier when the baby comes and you won?t be hit with two life changes at once!

5) Coupons & Samples: Start collecting coupons and samples early. If you will be using disposable diapers, many hospitals give out samples and coupons can be found year round. Ask friends and co-workers to keep you in mind if they come across any baby-related coupons they won?t be using.

6) Lean on Friends: It?s amazing how much you can save for your baby budget when you lean on friends and family to help out. Ask around if anyone has a baby swing or baby clothes they?d be willing to let you borrow. Hand-me-downs are no big thing when it comes to newborn babies because they go so quickly often they?re only worn once or twice.

Zito, Giants beat Cards, close NLCS deficit to 3-2

ST. LOUIS (AP) ? The big curveball was back, and Barry Zito mixed in some well-placed fastballs, too.

It was just like the good old days.

Zito was at his best Friday night, pitching San Francisco back into the NL championship series with a 5-0 win over the St. Louis Cardinals that narrowed its deficit to 3-2.

"All things considered, you know, there's definitely some playoff memories there, but they were in a different uniform," the soft-tossing lefty said after his first playoff win in six years sent the series back to San Francisco.

"This was probably the biggest one for me."

Game 6 will begin Sunday in the twilight at AT&T Park, with Ryan Vogelsong pitching against the Cardinals' Chris Carpenter.

"I'm sure Carpenter is going to be on top of his game, as always," Vogelsong said. "I'm going to have to be sharp because with him on the mound one run can lose a game for you."

Zito looked like the same guy who won 23 games and the 2002 AL Cy Young Award with the Athletics. He retired 11 batters in a row in one stretch while scattering six hits with six strikeouts in 7 2-3 innings.

Giants catcher Buster Posey twice tapped Zito on the chest when he was pulled in the eighth. It was Zito's fifth postseason win but first since 2006, shortly before he left the A's and signed a $126 million, seven-year contract with San Francisco.

"This is definitely it for me," Zito said. "Coming here, especially doing it in a Giants uniform. A lot of people were saying stuff about A's days. And for me, the most important thing is doing everything for San Francisco right now."

Zito was left off the postseason roster when the Giants won the 2010 World Series because he had pitched so poorly.

Zito's 15-8 record this year was his first winning season since joining the Giants. He started Game 4 of the division series against the Reds and lasted only 2 2-3 innings.

"I couldn't be happier for him," manager Bruce Bochy said. "He had it all going. He put on quite a show."

The defending champion Cardinals might have thrown away a chance to clinch a second straight World Series trip. Pitcher Lance Lynn's toss on a possible forceout deflected off the second-base bag, paving the way for the Giants' four-run fourth.

Lynn was trying to turn the front end of a double play.

"I turned to throw it and I just threw it in the ground," he said. "Just a bad play. You make a good throw there and we are out of the inning. It was one of those times where I just short-armed it a little bit."

Pablo Sandoval homered for the second straight night and Zito made an extremely rare offensive contribution with a perfectly executed bunt for an RBI single.

The Giants also made several nice plays behind Zito, including a juggling catch in right by Hunter Pence and a spectacular sliding stop by second baseman Marco Scutaro to rob pinch-hitter Shane Robinson on consecutive at-bats.

Once again this postseason, the Giants benefited from a big error.

Needing three straight wins at Cincinnati to avoid elimination in the division series, San Francisco began its comeback on a bobble by third baseman Scott Rolen in the 10th inning that gave the Giants the go-ahead run in Game 3.

The Giants improved to 4-2 on the road this postseason and have won Zito's last 13 starts, with the last setback on Aug. 2. They're averaging more than six runs a game during the streak, although the left-hander didn't need much help in this one.

Lynn, an 18-game winner his first year in the rotation, failed to make it out of the fourth for the second time in the series.

"I didn't give up a hit until the fourth, I had good stuff, it was just another bad inning," Lynn said. "This time of year, they are going to blow up on you, if you give them that extra out. And I gave them that extra out."

The Cardinals are seeking consecutive pennants for the first time since 1967-68, and trying to advance for the second year in a row as a wild-card entry. One more win would set up a rematch of the 2006 World Series against the Tigers, which the Cardinals took in five games.

Before the game, Jon Jay and David Freese spent time on the podium discussing why the Cardinals have been so successful, but manager Mike Matheny didn't think his players relaxed.

"There's distractions from you guys every day," Matheny told reporters after the game. "That's part of the gig. Just today we had a guy come out and pitch us tough, and we didn't get the execution when we needed it. That's what it all comes down to."

Lynn struck out five of his first 10 batters, sailing through the first three innings with no balls hit out of the infield. His undoing was a wild throw off the second-base bag attempting to get a forceout on a comebacker that paved the way for San Francisco's four-run fourth.

The Giants had runners on first and second with one out when Lynn gloved a tapper by Pence, wheeled and threw while shortstop Pete Kozma hustled to second. But Lynn threw a low dart off the bag with the ball bounding into shallow right field and Marco Scutaro scoring without a play from second.

Eighth-place hitter Brandon Crawford singled up the middle with the bases loaded on a full-count pitch with two outs, as Lynn just missed with a kick save for two more runs. Zito, who has just 30 career hits in 310 at-bats in the regular season with nine RBIs, laid down a perfect bunt for a fourth run.

Lynn has allowed four runs in both of his NLCS starts, although all four were unearned in Game 5. Matheny was noncommittal about the Cardinals' pitching plans if they made it to the World Series.

One possible rotation replacement is Jake Westbrook, coming off a pulled oblique muscle, who pronounced himself ready after throwing a simulated game earlier in the week.

"Moving forward, he's been a very, very good pitcher for us this season," Matheny said of Lynn. "And we don't look any further past right now, for right now."

Zito's only trouble came in the second when Yadier Molina and David Freese, both swinging on the first pitch, opened the inning with a single and double. Lynn, a career .056 hitter including the postseason, hit into a bases-loaded double play to end the threat.

Lynn was 3 for 50 with 36 strikeouts during the regular season, going hitless his last 42 at-bats.

NOTES: Standing room attendance for Game 5 was 47,075, a franchise best for league championship play, topping the previous best in Game 4 by 13. ... Actor Matthew Morrison sang the national anthem. ... Longtime Cardinals broadcaster Mike Shannon bounced a ceremonial first pitch from in front of the mound to Lou Brock, teammates on the last St. Louis team to go to consecutive World Series in 1967 and '68. ... Cardinals slugger Carlos Beltran has 10 career stolen bases in the postseason. ... Matt Carpenter, who subbed for Beltran in Games 3 and 4, is a career .529 hitter (9 for 17) against the Giants counting the postseason, with a homer and four RBIs. ... Cardinals rookie RHP Trevor Rosenthal struck out four in two scoreless innings. He has fanned 11 in 6 2-3 scoreless innings in the postseason while allowing just one hit. ... The Cardinals were shut out for the first time since Game 4 of the 2011 World Series, a 4-0 loss at Texas. ... Freese doubled in the second and has gotten at least one hit in all of his 14 postseason starts at home. It's the third-longest home hitting streak to start a postseason career.

Romney ups criticism of Obama's second-term plans

DELRAY BEACH, Fla. (AP) ? Heading into the campaign's final weeks, Republican presidential candidate Mitt Romney is upping his criticism of President Barack Obama's plans for a second term, accusing the Democrat of failing to tell Americans what he would do with four more years. The Obama campaign is aggressively disputing the notion, claiming it's Romney who hasn't provided specific details to voters.

At campaign events, in a new ad and fundraising appeal out Saturday, Romney is setting up the closing weeks as a choice between what he says is a "small" campaign that's offering little new policy and his own ambitious plan to fundamentally change America's tax code and entitlement programs.

The new Romney ad criticizes the president's policies on debt, health care, taxes, energy and Medicare, arguing that Obama is simply offering more of the same. The campaign did not say where the spot would air. The fundraising appeal hits Obama for raising taxes and increasing the debt by $5.5 trillion, repeating the lack-of-agenda criticism.

"Although President Obama won't lay out his plan for a second term, we already know what it will be ? a repeat of the last four years. We can't afford four more years of crushing debt and wasteful spending," Romney says in the letter, adding he has a clear plan to put America on a path to prosperity.

Both Obama and Romney retreated from the campaign trail Saturday to bone up on foreign policy, leaving the work of courting voters to their running mates.

Vice presidential candidate Paul Ryan on Saturday continued the no-agenda theme against Obama at campaign stops near Pittsburgh and in Belmont, Ohio.

"He's not even telling you what he plans on doing," Ryan told a rain-soaked crowd of about 1,100 people at a campground in coal-rich eastern Ohio.

Obama's campaign disputes the notion that the president hasn't outlined a detailed second-term agenda, pointing to his calls for immigration reform, ending tax breaks for upper income earners, fully implementing his health care overhaul and ending the war in Afghanistan.

In a statement sent after Romney's Friday night event, Obama campaign spokesman Danny Kanner ticked through a series of policy items, calling them "just part of President Obama's agenda for a second term."

Obama, at the Democratic National Convention, called for creating 1 million manufacturing jobs over the next four years with a mix of corporate tax rate cuts and innovation and training programs. He has set a goal of cutting the growth of college tuition in half over the next 10 years. He also has called for Congress to pass proposals he made last year that include includes tax credits for companies that hire new workers and funding for local municipalities to hire more teachers, police officers and firefighters.

As for why Republicans would back the same proposals they have already voted against, Obama has told supporters he expects his re-election would "break the fever" on Capitol Hill that led to gridlock during his first term.

Vice President Joe Biden made a diagnosis of his own on Saturday, saying Ryan had caught "Romnesia," the word Obama used the day before to describe what he calls Romney's changing polices.

"That man is contagious," Biden said of Romney, to loud cheers at a campaign stop in St. Augustine, Fla. "Congressman Ryan caught it as well."

He said the Wisconsin Congressman is now giving a new explanation for cuts in the budget he oversaw and passed in the House.

The president's aides are particularly irked by the questions about Obama's second-term agenda, because they say it's Romney who has failed to provide voters with details. They point to his refusal to provide specifics about his tax plan or outline what he would replace the president's health care overhaul with if he makes good on his promise to repeal the federal law.

An independent group backing Obama, though, is trying to renew attention on Romney's tenure at the helm of the private equity firm Bain Capital. The group, Priorities USA Action, is re-airing an ad about an AMPAD plant in Marion, Ind. That spot features former employee Mike Earnest recalling being told to build a stage from which officials of the office supply company later announced mass layoffs.

He says, "It was like building my own coffin." That ad first aired in battleground states in the summer.

Romney aides have said AMPAD was a struggling business to begin with, and Bain overall created many more jobs than were lost.

That ad will air in Colorado, Florida, Iowa, Ohio, Nevada, Virginia and Wisconsin. The new campaign will be in addition to a $30 million effort against Romney policy proposals, the group said.

Monday's debate in Boca Raton, Fla., with its focus on international affairs, is the third and final between the two rivals and comes just 15 days before the election.

Obama left Friday for Camp David, the presidential hideaway in Maryland's Catoctin Mountains, where he is huddled with advisers preparing for the debate. Among those with him are White House senior adviser David Plouffe and senior campaign strategist David Axelrod. Aides say Obama was also being assisted by National Security Adviser Tom Donilon and former Obama aide Karen Dunn.

Romney was also with aides preparing for the debate, spending the weekend in Florida.

Both campaigns are heavily targeting Florida and its 29 electoral votes ? the most of any tossup state. It was the second day of a two-day Florida swing for Biden, which overlapped a two-day swing by Ryan. Romney's wife, Ann, was also in Florida Saturday and First Lady Michelle Obama planned a visit Monday, ahead of the presidential debate that night in Boca Raton. The president is planning at least two days of campaigning in Florida after the debate.

Monday's 90-minute debate will be moderated by Bob Schieffer of CBS News. It will be similar to the first debate, with both men standing at lecterns on a stage. Schieffer has listed five subject areas, with more time devoted to the Middle East and terrorism than any other topic.

While the economy has been the dominant theme of the election, foreign policy has attracted renewed media attention in the aftermath of the attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya, that killed four Americans, including U.S. Ambassador Chris Stevens.

Obama had ranked well with the public on his handling of international issues and in fighting terrorism, especially following the death of Osama bin Laden. But the administration's response to the Libya attack and questions over levels of security at the consulate have given Romney and his Republican allies an issue with which to raise doubts about Obama's foreign policy leadership.

Romney has spent large amounts of time off the campaign trail to prepare for the upcoming foreign policy debate. Aides say the additional time preparing is well-spent even if it comes at the expense of public events.

Is Local Online Marketing Better Than Local Search Engine ...

Saturday, October 20th, 2012

Direct mail is just about always looked at even if it is afterward thrown away. Postcards are almost always read before they are thrown away or used later.

Radio advertising and marketing can be rewarding, but the audience has to be listening to the precise station at the precise time your advertisement plays, or your try is of no use. Similarly with TV. Newspaper advertising should work, but the reader is required to discover your ad in the newspaper, if the shoppers open the paper at all. But no one walks out to their mailbox, pulls out their bunch of mail, and disposes of it without investigating pretty much every section of their daily mail.

Perhaps 35% of major companies utilize Twitter, Perhaps 60% utilize Facebook. But 100% utilize direct mail. The real reasons? Because your response could be tracked. Direct mail pieces are generally used later, looked at another time, shown to friends, and brought into a local business to have as a shopping list.

But what?s the single most valuable use for direct mail, particularly postcards?

Pretty much every marketing and advertising concept utilized in local small business; direct mail, signage, tv, radio, and more really needs a link to your
