Researchers show that the global epidemic of Clostridium difficile 027/NAP1/BI in the early to mid-2000s was caused by the spread of two different but highly related strains of the bacterium rather than one as was previously thought. The spread and persistence of both epidemics were driven by the acquisition of resistance to a frontline antibiotic.

Unlike many other healthcare-associated bacteria, C. difficile produces highly resistant and infectious spores. These spores can promote the transmission of C. difficile and potentially facilitates its spread over greater geographical distances, even across continents.

This study highlights the ease and rapidity with which the hospital bacterium, C. difficile, can spread throughout the world, emphasising the interconnectedness of the global healthcare system.

"Between 2002 and 2006, we saw highly publicised outbreaks of C. difficile in hospitals across the UK, USA, Canada and Europe," says Dr Miao He, first author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "We used advanced DNA sequencing to determine the evolutionary history of this epidemic and the subsequent pattern of global spread.

"We found that this outbreak came from two separate epidemic strains or lineages of C. difficile, FQR1 and FQR2, both emerging from North America over a very short period and rapidly spread between hospitals around the world."

The team used the genetic history to map both epidemic strains of C. difficile using a global collection of samples from hospital patients between 1985 and 2010. They demonstrated that the two C. difficile strains acquired resistance to this antibiotic, fluoroquinolone, separately, a key genetic change that may have instigated the epidemics in the early 2000s.

"Up until the early 2000s, fluoroquinolone was an effective treatment for C. difficile infection," says Professor Brendan Wren, author from the London School of Hygiene and Tropical Medicine. "We've seen that since these strains acquired resistance to this frontline antibiotic, not only is it now virtually useless against this organism, but resistance seems to have been a major factor in the continued evolution and persistence of these strains in hospitals and clinical settings."

The team found the first outbreak strain of C. difficile, FQR1 originated in the USA and spread across the country. They also saw sporadic cases of this strain of C. difficile in Switzerland and South Korea. They found that the second strain of C. difficile, FQR2, originated in Canada and spread rapidly over a much wider area, spreading throughout North America, Australia and Europe.

The team showed that the spread of C. difficile into the UK was frequently caused by long-range geographical transmission event and then spread extensively within the UK. They confirmed separate transmission events to Exeter, Ayrshire and Birmingham from North America and a transmission event from continental Europe to Maidstone. These events triggered large-scale C. difficile outbreaks in many hospitals across the UK in the mid-2000s.

"We have exposed the ease and rapidity with which these fluoroquinolone-resistant C. difficile strains have transmitted across the world," says Dr Trevor Lawley, lead author from the Wellcome Trust Sanger Institute. "Our research highlights how the global healthcare system is interconnected and how we all need to work together when an outbreak such as this occurs.

"Our study heralds a new era of forensic microbiology for the transmission tracking of this major global pathogen and will now help us understand at the genetic level how and why this pathogen has become so aggressive and transmissible worldwide. This research will act as a database for clinical researchers to track the genomic changes in C. difficile outbreaks."

Becoming an electrician starts with getting the right schooling. One can start quite early, even in High School. Many vocational programs in secondary schools have an electrical program. Following High School graduation, one can enter a program at a college to further their learning. Community colleges often have excellent trades program, including electrical. In addition to their typical general education courses like math and English, students will take practical courses where they learn both the science behind the trade and also get to apply and learn new skills in hands-on work. If one desires to learn more about the scientific end of things, they can attend a four year college that offers advanced programs like electrical engineering or similar majors. Community colleges are great because they offer students practical experience.

One can also do some extra work on their own to increase their skills and education. It is a great idea to find an experienced individual who works in the field and get close to them. An experienced worker can offer electrician training in the form of an apprenticeship or might be able to hire a student to work for them. They can also share the pros and cons of the industry, as well as stories from on the job. This will give the young student a better idea of what daily life is like as an electrical worker, and help them decide if this is really the field that they want to devote their life to. Working with a professional can help one meet others in the field and perhaps potential future customers. The pro may also have some suggestions for training programs or courses that the aspiring electrician can take advantage of. They can serve as a reference for the student's resume.

Before one can be successful in industry, they must have to proper education and training. Fortunately, budding electrical workers have many options to help them reach their goals and better themselves.

University of California introduces a modern logo

After 144 years with the same old Victorian seal, the University of California has decided to go mod.

The university's original logo -- with its open book, 1868 date stamp and "Let there be light" script -- will still be in circulation, appearing on president's letters and official university documents. But marketing materials and websites will feature a radically simple and more contemporary symbol: a little "C" nesting inside a shield-shaped "U."

"They wanted something that would reflect the innovation, the character of California -- just more modern, user-friendly," said Dianne Klein of UC's Office of the President. "That's not to take away from the gravitas of the original seal."

The new look, fashioned

by an in-house design team, is part of a broader remake of the 10-campus university's image. It's meant to catch the eye of California residents, businesses and politicians alike -- to show how relevant the university is to the state, and, in turn, bring in more fundraising and state revenue.

Available in an array of colors, including beachy pastels, the logo figures prominently in the "Onward California" marketing campaign. Its slogan: "Whether you know it or not, the University of California, or a UC grad, has probably played a part in your day."

Klein said the intricate details of the original seal, though beautiful, don't reproduce well or come across digitally or when used in small places. Plus, she said, modernizing the

logo shows "there's nothing static about an excellent university."

Of course, logos and branding don't tend to reside anywhere near the center of an undergraduate's consciousness, especially the week before finals. On the campus of UC Berkeley on Thursday morning, most students interviewed said they hadn't seen or heard of UC's new look, which was quietly introduced last month. Some weren't quite sure what the original one even looked like.

At a cafe near the iconic Sather Gate, Jacqueline Williams studied the baby-blue and yellow image featured at the top of the UC Office of the President's Web page.

"It takes you a little bit to figure out what it is," she said.

Her friends weren't so kind. One described the soft colors and block letters as "childish." Another said her first take was "health care."

"I feel like when you're talking about a prestigious school, you don't change big things," said senior Correy Johnson.

Harry Rackmil, a sophomore, said he was partial to the original logo, but he could see why UC would want a modern look that would stand out in printed materials and online.

Anirudh Sri, on the other hand, said he found the whole thing "weird." Though quick to note that the design would have little bearing on his life at Cal, he said he saw the original seal as prestigious, an homage to the system's traditions and history.

"Harvard's not going around changing its seal," he said.

to simply as legends, the Pakistan Cricket Board (PCB) has decided to
send a delegation of 10 of Pakistans most famous and well known
cricketers from a bygone era to represent Pakistan on an official
capacity where they will undoubtedly join their counterparts from India
in witnessing the resumption of Indo Pak cricketing ties.

The Executive Coordination Committee (ECC) of the PCB has thus invited Hanif Mohammad, Imtiaz Ahmad, Majid Khan, Zaheer Abbas, Mushtaq Mohammad, Imran Khan, Javed Burki, Wasim Bari, Intikhab Alam and Sadiq Mohammad. As stated by PCB Chairman Zaka Ashraf, the purpose of this visit is to bring both the cricketing nations closer and will play an important role in strengthening the future relations between both the countries

Whilst Imran Khan has declined this invitation due to his political commitments and Majid Khan has also opted out of the invite, the remaining eight members of this elite fraternity are expected to travel to India in time for the 1st T20 International in Bangalore and are undoubtedly looking forward to playing a role in this momentous stage.

The left handed former Pakistan batsman, Sadiq Mohammad - the youngest of five Mohammad brothers which include such illustrious names as Hanif and Mushtaq is understandably overjoyed at being given the honour to represent Pakistan at this occasion. In exclusive remarks to PakPassion.net, Sadiq expressed his delight on being named as one of the legends to represent Pakistan stating that Its indeed an honour to be nominated by the PCB for this role and to be recognized as an ambassador for the tour of India which is happening after 5 years. We are all very proud of being selected in this manner. We are all thankful to Mr. Zaka Ashraf for giving us this opportunity and making us feel really good and it shows that the PCB hasnt forgotten about us! Its also a great gesture by the Pakistan cricket board to allow us this opportunity to meet with our counterparts from India who are also our friends

During his career, Sadiq played 41 Test matches and retired with a respectable average of 35.81. His opening partnership with Majid Khan against some of the worlds fastest bowling attacks and at a time when helmets were considered a novelty, was a treat to watch. His record against India was not as glorious as he would prefer scoring 163 runs in 4 Test matches at an average of 23.28. Despite the euphoria of his impending trip to India, this is one aspect of his career that he does look back on with some regret.

I have great memories of playing against India but on 3 occasions in India and one in Pakistan, I had some unremarkable innings scoring 41, 16, 47, 46, 5 and 8. Although the 46 I made at Madras (Chennai) does stand out as I had hit 10 fours and was batting really well when I was dismissed by an excellent legside catch by Syed Kirmani off the bowling of Kapil Dev. It was in my opinion one of my most enterprising innings. It would have been better if I had some fifties or hundreds against India but I always enjoyed playing against India. It was like a local derby playing against India was and is always very special

In terms of the most memorable and enjoyable match against India, Sadiq could look no further than the 3rd Test of the 1978-1979 series. Although he was dropped in that game in favour of Muddaser Nazar, he fondly recalls this game as one he will always remember for the drama of a typical India Pakistan encounter

The match that really stands out in my mind is the 3rd Test in Karachi where my brother and captain, Mushtaq Mohammad declared in the 2nd innings and then we had to chase down a target of 160 plus on the final day. We made some changes to the batting order during the run chase as there wasnt much time left. Asif Iqbal, Javed Miandad and Imran Khan came in and won the game for us. To me this was the most exciting game ever that I witnessed.

The India Pakistan rivalry always seems to bring out the best in both teams with apparently no quarter asked or given. However, behind this facade of bravado lies a deep sense of mutual respect for the skills that both sides bring to the fore. Sadiq has great admiration for his Indian counterparts and has no hesitation to mention the names of some of the players he considered as most worthy opponents during his playing days.

Sunil Gavaskar, Kapil Dev were the top of my list with Bishen Singh Bedi also the best I have played against. It was a treat to play against Bedi as was Chandrasekhar but I never felt too threatened by him even though he had taken quite a few wickets. In my mind, Bedi was the best of the Indian spinners.

Given the tremendous amount of interest being generated in the media and amongst ordinary fans regarding this series, it is a mystery as to why it has taken almost 5 years to restart this process. Whilst the reasons behind this interruption can be blamed on mutual mistrust and political factors, former combatants such as Sadiq are eager to see this relationship established on a more permanent basis even suggesting that both teams should consider neutral territory such as England to continue their battles.

We should put political considerations to one side and play each other. If it means playing in a neutral venue then England would be a great place for that due to the interest amongst people of Indo Pak origin and I believe it will be very successful series. Other places such as UAE may not get too much interest for Test matches but obviously ODIs would still get a lot of people to watch.

For former players like Sadiq Mohammad, the prospect of an India Pakistan series is a great one to savour and if the glorious history of some tantalizing encounters is anything to go by, there is always a special feeling when the two sides meet regardless of whether one is a spectator or a player

The India Pakistan rivalry is great maybe because we dont play often enough so players and fans are always looking forward to it. Then again, its a neighbouring country with whom we have some history due to events of partition and after that as well. To me the most important part of this rivalry is the quality of cricket and the players that participate in these games. From the old days of Gavaskar, Vishwanath, Bedi, Kapil Dev to the new breed of Tendulkar, Sehwag and Harbhajan there are always special players and performances in these matches. Its a local derby and great for players and spectators alike

Pakistan are scheduled to play 2 T20I games followed by 3 ODIs with the first T20I commencing in Bangalore on December 25th and the final game of the series being played on January 6th

Stem cell scientists discover potential way to expand cells for use with patients

ScienceDaily (Nov. 8, 2012) ? Canadian and Italian stem cell researchers have discovered a new "master control gene" for human blood stem cells and found that manipulating its levels could potentially create a way to expand these cells for clinical use.

The findings, published November 8 online ahead of print in Cell Stem Cell, usher in a new paradigm for the regulation of human blood stem cells, says co-principal investigator Dr. John Dick, who holds a Canada Research Chair in Stem Cell Biology and is a Senior Scientist at University Health Network's McEwen Centre for Regenerative Medicine and Ontario Cancer Institute (OCI), the research arm of the Princess Margaret Cancer Centre. He is also a Professor in the Department of Molecular Genetics, University of Toronto.

"For the first time in human blood stem cells, we have established that a new class of non-coding RNA called miRNA represents a new tactic for manipulating these cells, which opens the door to expanding them for therapeutic uses," says Dr. Dick.

In 2011, Dr. Dick isolated a human blood stem cell in its purest form -- as a single stem cell capable of regenerating the entire blood system -- paving the way for clinical uses. He also pioneered the cancer stem cell field by identifying leukemia stem cells in 1994 and colon cancer stem cells in 2007.

OCI lead author Dr. Eric Lechman says the research team removed a master control gene -- microRNA 126 (miR-126) -- that normally governs the expression of hundreds of other genes by keeping them silenced, which in turn keeps the stem cells in a non-dividing dormant state. The method was to introduce excess numbers of miR-126 binding sites into the stem cells by using a specially designed viral vector.

"The virus acted like a sponge and mopped up the specific miRNA in the cells. This enabled the expression of normally repressed genes to become prominent, after which we observed a long-term expansion of the blood stem cells without exhaustion or malignant transformation," says Dr. Lechman.

Adds Dr. Dick: "We've shown that if you remove the miRNA you can expand the stem cells while keeping their identity intact. That's the key to long-term stem cell expansion for use with patients." The co-principal investigator was Dr. Luigi Naldini, Director, of the San Raffaele Telethon Institute for Gene Therapy, Milan.

Dr. Dick's research was funded by the Canadian Institutes of Health Research, the Canadian Cancer Society, the Terry Fox Foundation, Genome Canada through the Ontario Genomics Institute, the Ontario Institute for Cancer Research, the Canada Research Chair Program, the Ontario Ministry of Health and Long-Term Care, the Canada Foundation of Innovation, as well as The Princess Margaret Cancer Foundation.

The evening ended much like it began: with Regina Spektor on stage, issuing an austere rendition one of her many imaginative songs about love and all its consequences.

On Wednesday night, between those songs, joined by a three-piece band (cello, keyboards, drums), she kept a crowd of more than 2,500 inside the Music Hall in her charming thrall, exhibiting her esteemed talents as a composer, lyricist, singer and musician. Spektor, 32, is a classically trained pianist who began composing more popular forms of music in her late teens. Since 2001, she has released six albums, including ?What We Saw From the Cheap Seats,? released in May. She would play nine tracks from the deluxe edition of that album during a 95-minute set. Whether she was playing something new, like ?Patron Saint? or ?All the Rowboats,? or an old favorite, like ?On the Radio,? ?Dance Anthem of the ?80s? or ?Fidelity,? her audience rewarded her with gales of applause. Between songs, almost to the point of excess, they bombarded her with song requests and expressions of affection and support.For the most part, she let her music do the talking, though she did admit to eating, ?so much barbecue I can?t think.?She had to restart one song (?One?), and she paused for several seconds during another (?Samson?) because she couldn?t remember the lyrics; otherwise she delivered a polished performance that was filled with clever lyrical odysseys and rapturous musical escapades.Her brightest gift is her knack for writing pop melodies with inventive twists. One of those is ?Small Town Moon,? a lovely piano ballad with a sunny melody that belies some of the gray-day lyrics: ?There?s a small town in my mind / How can I leave without hurting everyone that made me??That was a ?Cheap Seats? song that provoked a warm reaction; so did ?Don?t Leave Me (Ne Me Quitte Pas),? a song with an irresistible melody and lyrics that showcase her fetish for abstract wordplay. The cello lead on that song was stellar. Other highlights: ?Firewood,? the prettiest song on ?Cheap Seats,? and ?Sailor Song.?She played a few songs solo, at the piano, including ?The Prayer of Francois Villon.? She sang the opener, ?Ain?t No Cover,? acapella, tapping on her microphone occasionally for some percussion. ?Call Them Brothers? was performed as a guitar duet with her husband, Jack Dishel, who opened the show as Only Son.She ended her four-song encore with a song that had been requested several times, ?Samson? ? the hymn whose lyrics she forgot. She was alone at the piano for that one, too, rendering another bittersweet tale of love come and gone to a crowd that hung on each word, down to the evening?s final line: ?You are my sweetest downfall / I loved you first.?
